Help send local vocal talent to competition

The B-Tones, a young men's vocal ensemble developed through a partnership with the Sun Valley Summer Symphony School of Music and the Wood River High School choral department, will host a concert on Sunday, March 4, to raise money for their upcoming trip to the Heritage Music Festival in Anaheim, Calif.

The hour-long concert will include another ensemble, A Few Good Men. Tenor John Mauldin will join his sons Max and Kole, both members of the B-Tones, and Wood River senior Nathan Kniffen will sing with both groups.

The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Light on the Mountains Spiritual Center, just north of Gimlet. The Anaheim challenge is in April.

Open auditions for local theater productions

Company of Fools, St. Thomas Playhouse and the nexStage Theatre will hold joint auditions Tuesday, March 6, at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey. These will be general auditions and not for specific shows.

Actors and actresses ages 16 and up are welcome. Auditions are by appointment only from 4-6 p.m. To schedule a time, call the Company of Fools' office at 788-6520 or email denise@companyoffools.org.

Lecture topic is government accountability

Constitution scholar David Gray Adler will discuss "Holding Government Accountable" in a free town hall-style public lecture and discussion Thursday, March 8, at 6 p.m., at the Community Campus in Hailey, Room 301.

Adler is a professor of political science and director of the James A. and Louise McClure Center for Public Policy Research at the University of Idaho.

The issue of governmental accountability is nothing new to the citizenry," Adler says. "But recent events—security fears in the wake of 9/11, three wars, rising deficits, a high and prolonged jobless rate, and a sluggish economy—have spiked Americans' frustration, resentment and anger towards Washington."

Spring means showcase of high school drama talent

The Wood River High School drama department this week will present its annual "Spring One Acts," student-directed, acted and produced one-act plays.

The lineup includes "The Lesson," directed by Syringa Hansen; "Hypneurosis," directed by Katie Walton; "Hippies, Housewives and Watering Holes," directed by Britlynn Ward; "The Man Who Went Insane From Money," by Drake Arial and a special scene presentation from "The Chalk Garden," directed by the school's Performing Arts Academy film teacher, Cathy Reinheimer.

Performances are Thursday, March 1, and Friday, March 2, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 3, at 2 p.m. in the WRHS Distance Learning Lab.

Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students and can be bought at the door. Proceeds will help fund the spring musical in April.

Urban lifestyles are on display at The Center

"Urban Lifecycles" explores the growth, decay and renewal of cities through the eyes of a diverse group of contemporary artists.

The exhibition at the Center for the Arts in Ketchum includes an installation by Boise artist Amanda Hamilton on Ketchum's history, and photo/video documentation of projects done by artists in other cities.

Free guided tours are being offered Tuesday, March 6, at 2 p.m. and Thursday, March 8, at

5:30 p.m.

Ski joring event slated for March

Ski joring is back with proceeds going to the Sagebrush Equine Training Center for the Handicapped.

Spectators are welcome to the event at 26 Townsend Gulch in Bellevue, noon Saturday,  March 3 and noon Sunday, March 4. The winner will be chosen from the combined scores from both days.

Last week to enjoy the 'Carnage'

Company of Fools presents the 2009 Tony Award-winning play "God of Carnage" starring Keith Moore and Patsy Wygle and John Glenn and Denise Simone as couples with children in a playground fight.

The show will run at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey today, Feb. 29, and Thursday, March 1, at 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, March 2-3, at 8 p.m. Tickets starts at $30 but various packages are available by calling 578-9122 or visiting companyoffools.org.

Zumba for cancer patient and family

On Thursday, Feb. 9, valley resident John Ramsdell was diagnosed with gemistocytic astro cytoma grade 3 tumor (brain cancer). He had a massive tumor removed from his brain the next day.

On Saturday, March 3, there will be a Zumbathon to raise money for the Ramsdell family to help with the mounting expenses.

The event will be held at the Hailey Elementary School gym from 7-9 p.m.

A $10 donation is requested at the door. Raffle tickets are $5.

How mining shaped Idaho

Attend a free presentation tonight by historian Tom Blanchard, who will talk about the rise and fall and rise of mining in Idaho.

"Once and Future Mine: Idaho's Mining History and Future Prospects" will be held at the Community Library in Ketchum on Feb. 29 at 6 p.m.

John Robison, public lands director for the Idaho Conservation League, will talk about recent mining proposals such as the Thompson Creek mine, environmental concerns and the politics behind the reformation effort aimed at the Mining Law of 1872.

Girls on the Run opportunities

Small teams of coaches are needed who can commit to mentoring girls from Girls on the Run, two days a week, for a 10-week spring season. New coaches can choose between the following training sessions: Saturday, March 3, from 9 a.m. to noon, or Monday, March 5, from 5-8 p.m.

"Women and girls connecting" is the theme behind the annual Luna Fest, to be held Friday, March 9, at the nexStage Theatre in Ketchum. Films and presentations including a silent auction will start at 5 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door and $10 for students and seniors.

SnowBoxinging Derby

Break out the cardboard and duct tape creativity for the Snow Boxinging Derby at Rotarun Ski Area, Saturday, March 3.

Medals will be awarded for fastest, most creative and most inspiring racers.

The entry fee is $10 per individual or $25 per business. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. on the day of the race.
