Gund Cup playoffs begin Tuesday

Two-time defending champion Yoga College of India will take the top seed into the single elimination Gund Cup Senior A Hockey League men's tournament starting Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Tuesday's semi-finals at Sun Valley Skating Center match No. 1 Yoga College vs. No. 4 Sun Valley Auto Club/Grumpy's at 9:10 p.m., preceded by No. 2 Morgan's Fine Finishes vs. No. 3 Lefty's Bar & Grill at 8 p.m.

Championship game of the 31st annual Gund Cup featuring the two winning teams is Tuesday, March 6. Yoga has won four Gund Cups in the last six years. In fact, Yoga and Grumpy's have been in the title game for the last seven years.

Yoga cemented its top standing Tuesday with its fourth consecutive win 5-3 over Lefty's, loser of four straight. It was 3-3 after two stanzas. Yoga seized control in the third.

Single goals for Yoga came from Tommy Heinrich, Tate Mills, Bryan O'Connell, Taylor Rothgeb and Pete Whitehead. Bob Crosby and Jack Weekes had assists. Scoring for Lefty's were Randy Flood, Chad Levitan and Ryan Enrico. Assisting was Matt Ward.

In Tuesday's other game, Morgan's and Sun Valley Auto Club/Grumpy's battled to a 6-6 draw after a five-minute overtime. Morgan's led 3-0 early in the first, only to yield four unanswered goals. The rest of the game was a seesaw affair.

Jamie Ellison (2 assists) and John Ellison Jr. (1 assist) each scored two goals for Morgan's. Single goals came from Vilnis Nikolaisons and Chris Zarkos. Helpers for Morgan's came from Chris Benson, Jeff Enos and Dave Hennessy.

Scoring multi goals for Grumpy's were John McGuone (2 assists) and Frank Salvoni (3 assists), with Rune Haavik scoring once. Rian Timmons (2) and Cody Proctor had assists.

Final 12-game standings: 1—Yoga (9-3-0, 18 points). 2—Morgan's (7-3-2, 16 points). 3—Lefty's (4-6-2, 10 points). 4—SV Auto/Grumpy's (1-9-2, 4 points).
