Carey opens with 18-point win in Northside

Boys debut at Castleford

The defending Northside Conference champion and reigning State 1A Division 2 king Carey School Panthers (15-6) opened the Northside tourney Tuesday with a 49-31 win over Richfield, at Castleford.

Senior Dillon Cenarrusa (11.0 ppg) scored a season-high 21 points on 9-for-12 field goal shooting and the Panther defense did the rest—making 15 steals as No. 8 Richfield (5-16) committed 25 turnovers.

The Panthers led 28-10 at halftime and coasted to their 13th straight triumph.

Coach Dick Simpson's Carey boys next play Monday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. on the Castleford floor in the semi-final against No. 4 Murtaugh (12-8), a 68-55 winner over No. 5 Lighthouse Christian Academy (7-13) Tuesday.

Other Carey contributors included Garrett Lee (11 points, 7 rebounds), Baley Barg (6 points, 4 boards, 4 assists, 2 blocks, 3 steals), Sheldon Hansen (8 points) and Jack Cenarrusa (4 assists, 2 steals).

Wednesday, No. 2 Castleford (11-8) held off the No. 7 Community School Cutthroats (6-11) by a 48-28 score. In the other first-round game, No. 3 Dietrich was a 43-36 winner over No. 6 Camas County (7-12).

Cutthroat scorers were Taylor Adler 9 points, Will Brokaw 7, Henry Rickbeil 6, Jake Flaherty 2, Doug DuFur 2 and Nick Krekow 2. Last year's runner-up Castleford led 27-11 at half.

The Cutthroats try to stay alive in the loser bracket of the single elimination consolation bracket tournament Monday, Feb. 20 with a 5 p.m. game against Camas. Castleford and Dietrich clash in Monday's other semi-final, at 6:30 p.m.

Championship game is Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Dietrich keeps JV title

The No. 2-seeded Dietrich Blue Devils kept their Northside Conference junior varsity tournament title Tuesday with a 52-47 win over the top-seeded Carey Panthers (16-6) in the championship game at Castleford. It was the third JV title in four years for Dietrich. The Blue Devils made their 16-11 first-quarter lead stand up.

Free throws told the story, Dietrich making 13-of-22 and Carey 2-of-4. Carey freshman Nate Adamson (22 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 6 steals) had the hot hand. Adding 8 points apiece were Tori Alvarez and Matt Whitworth (10 rebounds).

Carey made the title game of the four-team JV tourney with a 75-67 victory over No. 4 Lighthouse Christian Monday. Panther leaders were Whitworth (20 points, 7 boards), Adamson (18 points, 9 assists, 5 steals), Alvarez (8 points) and Luis Garcia (11 points).

Over the 22-game season Carey shot 82-of-268 (31%) from 3-point range led by top scorer Adamson (17.8 ppg, 34 3-pointers, 100 steals, 128 assists). Carey (52.0 ppg) also shot 53% from the free throw line but was out-rebounded by 676-481. Other top scorers were Whitworth (10.0 ppg, 5.8 rebounds), Gunner Thompson (11.0 ppg) and Alvarez (9.1 ppg).
