Midgets earn hockey split at Salmon

Tuning up for its home state tournament Feb. 23-26 on resort ice, the Sun Valley Midgets high school hockey team won two of its four games in the Salmon tournament Feb. 10-12.

Sun Valley was out-shot 74-38 in dropping its first two games 5-1 to Skyline of Idaho Falls and 8-1 to Spokane (Wash.). Then the Suns bounced back with 7-0 and 8-4 victories Saturday and Sunday over Boise and Salmon.

Goalie Willis Sanchez-duPont (107 saves weekend) earned the shutout against Boise with 23 saves. Top weekend scorers for coach Chris Benson were Tom Crosby (5 goals, 7 assists) and Liam Jablonski (7 goals, 2 hat tricks).

Jablonski recorded his first hat trick with two goals coming on the power play in the 7-0 win over Boise. Crosby added 5 assists in the game. Single goals were by Eli Conrad, Crosby, Rickie Jeneson (power play), Crosby and Sam Ruddell.

It was closer against Salmon with Jablonski netting 4 goals. Crosby (2 goals) and Conrad (2 goals) extended the 4-3 Suns lead with goals in the third period. Sanchez-duPont backstopped the Suns with 23 saves.

Other weekend scorers: Conrad 3 goals/0 assists; Drew Barsch 0/3; Jeneson 1/1; Ruddell 1/0; Riley Sibbach 0/1; and Mason Noyes 0/1. Also on the roster were Cam Jenner Karel Kaiser and Hagan Barsch.
