Merrick quickest on Soldier downhill

Skip Merrick captured his seventh Sammis/Camas Cup downhill title Tuesday during a two-day series of Intermountain Cup downhills on Salmon River Buckaroo run at Fairfield's Soldier Mountain.

Merrick, the 1990 U.S. National downhill king, clocked a time of 1:27.75 in the 15th annual event named for Brett Sammis, who died at 31 following a ski accident on Baldy in Feb. 1997. Sammis was an avid skier, athlete and outdoorsman whose character and personality attracted legions of friends.

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation racers Connor Farrow and Samantha Busby won events during the Soldier Mountain Downhills Tuesday and Wednesday. They were a part of the Intermountain Division junior series, designed for A, J1/J2/J3 classes (ages 13-20).

There were 37 juniors in the two-day, three-race series, of which 21 came from the SVSEF. In addition, there were local J4 and J5 racers in the field.

Here are their DH placings by race and class:

J1 boys: Connor Farrow 1-2-2.

J2 boys: Tanner Josey 1-2-2; Taylor Adler 2; Logan Shipley 3-3-3; and William Harder 5-1-1.

J3 boys: Jay Fitzgerald 1; Griffin Curtis 2-2-2; Will Snyder 3; Austin Savaria 4-3-DNF; Yuri McClure 5; Emmett Say 7-5-4; John Blackburn 8; Michael Levy 9-6-6; Wyatt Smith 12-9-8; Travis Flynt 14; Taylor Cooper DNF; and Trenor Gould DNF.

J3 girls: Samantha Busby 1-1-1; Haley Cutler 2-2-2; Madison Milgard 3-4-3; and Isabella Welsh 8-8-10.

J4 boys: Noah Leininger 2-2-2; Erik Eisen 3-5-3; Ethan Daves 4; Mac Mizer 5-3-4; Cooper Dart 6-4-5; Charlie Stumph 7; and Jake Blackburn 8.

J4 girls: Sage Rheinschild 1-1-1; Pilar Pennell 2; Molly Milgard 3-3-2; Libby Kaiser 4-5-5; Alyssa Ritzel 5-4-4; and Libby Lindstrom 6-6-6.

J5 boys: Wyatt Minor 1; and Bennett Snyder 3.
