Can there be rebel harmony?

Marley in the Mountain sings so

There are lots of ways to be nice to yourself this Presidents Day weekend, one of which calls itself niceness exemplified. This is the fourth year for the “greatest show on snow” in Ketchum Town Plaza.

"I sing songs of rebel harmony to balance me and help me break these mental and societal chains. With love everything is possible. With love, life isn't an obstacle. The art form of music is a communication device, which can send good, or bad, frequencies through the air waves. Therefore, it is important for us to create original, positive music to shine or reflect onto a suffering nation. Rhythm: balance in life, natural progression that correlates with equality. . . ." Abja

It's high time this suffering nation got a little positivity, and Abja is bringing his version to the people of the valley this Presidents Day weekend as the headliner for the fourth annual Marley in the Mountains festival.

Abja is heralded in the music press as continuing to refine the genre of reggae and its message of freedom for African people with original songs and arrangements that convey the relationship between love and revolution.

"This is the good stuff," said festival organizer Danny Walton of Abja, who is making his first appearance in Ketchum on Saturday, Feb. 18, along with the Lions of Kush.

Other live acts over the six-hour festival include California's top reggae performer, Soulmedic, backed by Lions Den Sound System and DJ Vision. Rounding out the lineup will be Idaho's own Old Death Whisper, Army of Pines, Captain Dano and the Nobodies with reggae/hip-hop sensation Obie Won as the MC.

Walton, founder of Mountain Niceness Productions, said a scheduling snafu caused some planning headaches this year, but revealed to him how much people looked forward to the event.

"People really put this on their calendars now," he said of the now biannual festival. "It's a lot of work, but that's what I was going for when I started, an event that the community really supports that portrays all that is unique about our mountain lifestyle."

Walton said this musical lineup always encourages all ages.

"If you scan the front row of the crowd, you will see a 60-year age span. It's totally cool," he said.

All tickets purchased before the show date include a $5 contribution to Higher Ground, the latest effort by Sun Valley Adaptive Sports to reach wounded veterans and engage them in spirit building through therapeutic adventures.
