Spark a heart

Valentine’s weekend provides opportunities to turn up the heat

The arts community has done its best to ensure that there are no lonely hearts this Valentine's Day weekend, with cabarets, concerts and dances planned throughout the valley starting tonight, Feb. 10, until Cupid's bow goes back in its case Tuesday night.

Friday night there is "Love in the Air" as musical lovebirds Michelle Johnson and Brian Major share the spotlight at the Sun Valley Opera House at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40 for general admission and there are lots of pre-show packages with perks available. Call 726-0991 or visit www.sunvalleyopera.com.

To create the ambiance of a New York piano bar, nexStage will convert its theatre into an intimate café-style gathering spot this weekend. The Valentine's-themed cabaret show, directed by Patti Parsons, features soprano Stephanie Streja, piano man Joe Fos, guitar player Brad Hershey and local vocalists Claudia McCain, Jana Arnold, Patsy Wygle, Keith Moore, Joy Bond, Ben Schepps, Heather Johnston, Dean Cerutti, Dawson Howard, Nancy Auseklis, Sue Noel, Collett Pruitt, Betsy Sise, Hollie Ann Hatch, Rika Pere, Tony Barriatua and Alyssa Hershey. Shows Saturday, Feb. 11, and Sunday, Feb. 12, begin at 6:30 p.m. and the $20 ticket includes a no-host bar and hors d'oeuvres.

On the holiday itself, romantics get all that and a box of chocolates and champagne for $25. This show starts at 5 p.m. to work around dinner plans.

For tickets, stop by the nexStage Theatre on Main Street in Ketchum or call 726-9124.

Saturday night is the night for the hoofers among us.

There is an all-ages dance contributing to an improvement fund for the Blaine County Fairgrounds in Carey. A disc jockey will spin the tunes and formal attire is encouraged though not required. The party starts at 7 p.m. at the Community Campus gym. Couples are $25, singles $15 and 12 and under are free. Get tickets from the 4H Extension office or the Golden Elk in Hailey.

Also Saturday, Feb. 11, is the Boutonnieres annual Valentine's Ball at the Sun Valley Lodge Dining Room, with formal or black tie dress, no-host reception, dinner and dancing with DJ Lenny Joseph starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are all-inclusive at $70 per person and reservations can be made by calling 622-2800.
