Rotarun offers Friday night race series

Power failure postponed the official Jan. 21 opening of Hailey’s Rotarun Ski Area, also called Art Richards Appreciation Day. Still showing up that day were, from left, Eric Wesley, Joan Davies of Hailey and Eric’s father, Scott Wesley. Scott Wesley said he has volunteered at Rotarun for 10 years. His fondest memory remains his first day at Rotarun, when 14 inches of new powder made him the only skier out that day. “That’s probably why I’m still here,” he said. Photo by Willy Cook

Nighttime racing starts Friday, Feb. 3 at Rotarun Ski Area three miles west of Hailey and continues for four Fridays.

The "head-to-head" dual alpine series is open for all ages and equipment—alpine, telemark or snowboard. It's a team format, but you can also participate individually.

Jeff Smith, president of the non-profit Rotarun Ski Club organization, said, "Rotarun has been made by a lot of generous support by the trades in this community. This is our way to give a little fun back to all those plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and small businessmen and women."

The affordable price includes lift ticket, racing, raffle and awards party at Rotarun after the race. Cost for one night is kids (15-and-under) for $15 and adults $20. If you pre-pay for the four-race series, cost is $50 kids and $70 adults. Corporate team sponsorship is encouraged.

Race series sponsors include 5B Garage in Ketchum, Rotary Club, Edward Jones, Hearing Aid and Mountain Fairy. Some race equipment is being provided by Wood River Ski Team.

At Friday's opening race, there will be single seeding run beginning with kids at 6 p.m. (sign-ups 5-6 p.m.). From that first timed run, pairs are formed based on comparable times. Every effort will be made to ensure you'll have one dual race against someone of similar ability.

Friday's winner will be the fastest combined time of two runs. The optional team division will also have a dual format. At the Feb. 24 finals, series points will be tabulated and a "ski off" between the top men and women will confirm the King and Queen of the Hill.

Pre-register at facebook.com/RotarunSkiArea, contact Eric Wesley 788-1350 or e-mail  HYPERLINK "mailto:rotarunskiarea@gmail.com" rotarunskiarea@gmail.com.

Mountain Fairy will provide transportation to and from the 5B Garage in Ketchum.

In February Rotarun is open for night skiing Wednesdays and Fridays from 6-9 p.m., plus Saturdays from 10-4 and and Sundays 12-4. Lift tickets are adults $15, kids $10 and 5-and-under free.
