Panther teams post wins at Murtaugh

Chavez, Parke lead the scoring

Carey High School's boys' varsity basketball team streaked to its sixth consecutive triumph Tuesday with a 65-50 road win over another Northside Conference contender, Murtaugh's Red Devils.

Senior Chance Chavez (22 points on 7-for-11 shooting) paced the 43% Panther shooting night in the tough Murtaugh gym—where Carey out-rebounded the Devils 39-30. Murtaugh couldn't hit a lick (2-for-24) from 3-point range.

Coach Dick Simpson's Panthers (8-6) stayed unbeaten in Northside games at 4-0 in the first game of a four-game road swing. Carey visited Bliss Thursday night, goes to Oakley today, Friday and travels down the road to Richfield Tuesday.

Other Carey leaders were Baley Barg (13 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks) and Dillon Cenarrusa (15 points, 11 boards). Enjoying an active night was Jack Cenarrusa (6 points, 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals and 5 blocks).

Contributors included Jordan Dilworth (4 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals), Poncho Gamino (2 points) and Sheldon Hansen (2 points).

CHS girls romp over Devils

It was another winning night for the Carey School girls' varsity basketball team at Murtaugh Tuesday.

Coach Lane Durtschi's Panthers (8-5, 4-2 league) won for the fourth time in five games by a 59-24 margin over the host Red Devils. Eight Panthers scored points and Carey put together a 23-point third period to blow the game wide open.

The only thing that wasn't working for Carey was its 3-point shooting (1-for-16), but the Panthers shot 53% from 2-point range for overall 41% shooting from the field. Leading the way was Jaide Parke (21 points, 4 steals, 2 assists).

Other Carey contributors included Nicole Gomez (13 points, 2 rebounds), Morgan Parke (9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists), Darby Northcott (4 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists), Lilly Rivera (3 points), Micaela Adamson (3 points, 5 rebounds), Ashley Durtschi (2 points), Breana Harshbarger (2 points) and Angelica Zarate (2 points, 2 steals).

Carey (5-2 road) visited Bliss Thursday night. The Carey game at Richfield (12-4) Tuesday, Jan. 31 won't count in league standings. The Northside tournament begins Saturday, Feb. 4 in Murtaugh.
