Saturday, Jan. 28

Ski the Rails: A family-friendly 12-mile ski from Ketchum to Hailey along the Wood River Trail. Walk, snowshoe and classic or skate-ski along the former Union Pacific Railroad. Official start is 10 a.m. at Serenade Lane in Ketchum, finish at Myrtle Street in Hailey with an after-party at the Sun Valley Brewery.

Skin It 2 Win It Randonee Race: Teams of one, two or four people will skin from the base of Dollar Mountain to the summit, then ski back to start in a relay-style race. Racers will compete to complete the most number of laps in five hours. Costumes required. Entry fee is $50 a person, proceeds to benefit the Sawtooth National Forest Avalanche Center. Official start is at 10 a.m.

Galena and Trails Winter Benefit: Dinner and silent and live auctions to benefit the 130 km Galena Lodge Trails system. Tickets are $95 per person. From 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Limelight Room at the Sun Valley Inn.

Boulder Training Clinics: Fischer Athlete Nicole DeYong will lead this clinic designed to get skiers ready for the Boulder Mountain Tour. Clinics will cover race preparation, nutrition, tactics, aid stations and other techniques. Cost is $40 per session. Call 726-4010 to register.

Sunday, Jan. 29

Alturas Lake Trail Ski and Dinner: Spend the day Nordic skiing the 16 km Alturas Lake Ski Trail, which winds along Alturas Lake Creek and through meadows to Alturas Lake. Ski to be followed by an apres-ski dinner at Smiley Creek Lodge just north of Galena Summit. Ski starts at 11 a.m., buffet dinner to be served between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Call (877) 774-3547 for reservations.

Monday, Jan. 30

Building a Bigger Engine: Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation head coach Rick Kapala will give a lecture on how skiers can improve their physical capacities for Nordic skiing. Topics include training, workout design and monitoring. Starts at 7 p.m. at The Community Library in Ketchum.

Tuesday, Jan. 31

Boulder Mountain Tour Technique and Tactics Clinic: Shuttle to Galena Lodge leaves the Sawtooth National Recreation Area Headquarters at 8:30 a.m. Clinis will cover the course and tactics, technique and race strategy. Cost is $95 a person. To register, visit

Snowshoe Outing: Join the Galena Lodge on a snowshoe hike in the Boulder Mountains. Wildlife biologist Ann Christensen will be on hand to identify animal tracks along the trail. Participants are urged to dress warmly and bring water, though snowshoes are available for rent. Starts at 3:30 p.m. at Galena Lodge.

Galena Twilight Dinner and Ski: Join Galena Lodge concessionaires Don Shepler and Erin Zell for dinner and an evening ski or snowshoe trek through Galena's groomed trails. Dinner and trips begin at 6 p.m. at Galena Lodge 17 miles north of Ketchum.

Wednesday, Feb. 1

WinterSun Classic: Nordic races that are precursors to the 2013 U.S. National Masters Championships. Registration ends at 8:30 a.m.; races begin at 10 a.m. at the Sun Valley Nordic Center on Trail Creek Road. Entry fee is $15 for the 10 km, $10 for the 5 km.

Sun Valley Ski Hall of Fame Induction: Notable Alpine and Nordic skiers will be inducted into the Ketchum Sun Valley Ski and Heritage Foundation's Ski Hall of Fame. Event includes live music, drinks and brief presentations by each athlete. Ceremony starts at 4 p.m.

Story Time with Jim Galanes: Three-time U.S. Olympian Jim Galanes will share his unique perspective on cross-country skiing and talk about his experience as a U.S. ski racer and Olymic team coach. Hot cocoa and peppermint schnapps will be served. Starts at 7 p.m. at the Community Library in Ketchum.


Thursday, Feb. 2

Skate Ski Clinic with Jim Galanes: The three-time Olympian will lead an informative clinic that includes tips and tactics for the Boulder Mountain Tour. Skiers start from the Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters parking lot at 11:30 a.m. Register in advance by emailing

Nordic Wax Clinic: Nordic wax expert Nathan Schultz will be at Sturtevants in Hailey helping skiers get their gear ready for the Boulder Mountain Tour. Clinic runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

NordicTownUSA Downtown Jam and Sprints: World class, Olympic-caliber athletes will sprint at the corner of 4th Street and 2nd Avenue in Downtown Ketchum as families enjoy music, drinks, dinner and a bonfire. Also features a snowshoe dance competition. Festivities begin at 4 p.m.

Party at Perry's: Join Perry's for dinner on Thursday and 15 percent of sales will go to the Galena Trails Benefit. Dinner served from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. nightly during the Nordic Festival. Reservations at

Friday, Feb. 3

2012 SWIX Boulder Mountain Tour Expo: Entrants should pick up race bibs, clothing bags and other swag at the Boulder Mountain Expo at the Wood River Y on Saddle Road in Ketchum. Expo is open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Boulder Mountain Tour Wax Clinic: Get a free wax clinic from Nathan Schultz of BNS and Holmenkol, who will discuss and demonstrate how to prep skis for the Boulder Mountain Tour. At Sturtevants in Ketchum, 1-2 p.m.

SWIX Boulder Mountain Tour Wax Clinic: Missed the first one? Join SWIX race techs for a free discussion and demonstration of ski prep for the Boulder Mountain Tour. At Sturtevants in Ketchum, 3-4 p.m.

Best of Banff Film Festival: The largest travelling film festival in the world is coming to Ketchum to show 15 mountain films over two nights. All proceeds support the Friends of the Sawtooth National Forest Avalanche Center and the Satipo Kids Project. Also featuring a raffle. Begins at 7 p.m. at the NextStage Theater in Ketchum.

Saturday, Feb. 4

2012 Swix Boulder Mounain Tour: One of America's longest-running and most respected cross country ski races. The race crosses the Boulder Mountains for 32 km, drawing athletes of all abilities and from across the country. Begins at 10 a.m. at the Senate Meadows start area at Galena Lodge, finishes at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area Headquarters.
