No snow, then too much

No snow. Then, too much snow.

But the Sun Valley Ski Club's Billy Goat Loppet cross-country ski race sponsored by Backwoods Mountain Sports managed to come off Saturday, Jan. 21 for 33 diehard competitors who found fresh, softer-than-usual snow conditions.

Podium placers for the 10-kilometer skate race north of Ketchum were—Men: 1—Jon Engen (33:19). 2—David Vanderpool. 3—Kris Thoreson. Women: 1—Morgan Arritola (32:49). 2—Brooke Hovey. 3—Muffy Ritz.

Organizer Jenny Busdon said, "Due to the 'snowpocalypse,' organizers were unsure whether they could, in fact, stage the race. First, it was thought we wouldn't be able to have the race at Billy's Bridge due to lack of snow.

"Then it became obvious when two big fast-moving snowstorms hit the Sun Valley area Thursday and Friday before the race, there was every possibility it wouldn't be staged at all due to too much snow!"

Busdon thanked Hammer Nutrition, Perry's, Atkinsons', Clear Creek Disposal and to all the volunteers who helped make the race happen under challenging conditions. She gave special thanks to Blaine County Recreation District for its phenomenal job the night before of packing down the course to make it skiable.
