Police lacked compassion

We recently encountered a case in which the Hailey Police Department failed to exercise discretion and humane judgment. At 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 12 we were driving past the middle school to our home in Northridge. The speed limit on the road is 15 mph and it is alleged we were exceeding that limit. Absolutely no traffic was anywhere on the road as school was in session.

We patiently explained to the officer who stopped us that we were returning home to call the funeral home to arrange for the funeral of my wife's sister. He nevertheless imposed a ticket fining us and refused to reduce the charge to a warning. We are not even sure if she was speeding, or if his equipment was up-to-date.

We are sure that revenue generation was his goal and he would not have made his goal if he had used any discretion. His lack of understanding seriously upset my wife.

We expect better treatment from our police and the exercise of compassion and discretion.
