Flood and Patterson Memorial races here Friday

A highlight of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation alpine ski racing calendar arrives Friday through Sunday, Jan. 20 on Baldy when the Laura Flood Memorial and Allan Patterson Memorial A/J1/J2 Intermountain Division races are staged on the Warm Springs side.

The Patterson Memorial, Sun Valley's oldest junior ski race, is Friday featuring giant slalom on Hemingway. It remembers the Hailey downhiller who died in 1977 at age 20. The 22nd annual Flood Memorial is Saturday and Sunday (men GS Saturday/SL Sunday and women SL Saturday/GS Sunday). It honors the memory of the Sun Valley racer who died in 1990 at the age of 19.

Sign up for Town Series

Teams are signing up for the 21st annual Sun Valley Town Series of Wednesday team ski races on Baldy's Cozy ski run.

Alpine team racing starts Wednesday, Jan. 25 and lasts through March 21. Each Wednesday race begins at 11 a.m. on Cozy. There is a two-week break during the Presidents' Day holiday—with no racing Feb. 22 and 29.

Mike Wrobel of the Sun Valley Race Department said racers should sign up promptly at the Warm Springs Lodge Desk. Up to 300 racers on four-member teams enjoy the seven-week dual modified giant slalom racing series each year.

Team cost is the same as last year, $360. Telemarkers, snowboarders and downhillers are welcome. Call 622-6356 to sign up, or email svrace@sunvalley.com.

Billy Goat Loppet racing on Saturday

The Sun Valley Ski Club presents the 2012 Billy Goat Loppet cross-country ski event sponsored by Backwoods Mountain Sports on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. at Billy's Bridge in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area north of Ketchum. The 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) freestyle race is a great tune-up for the upcoming Boulder Mountain Ski Tour. Register at the Billy's Bridge parking area between 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday, entry fee $10 (18-and-under free). For more details contact Jenny Busdon 726-1649 or Ted Angle 788-9458.

Nordic racers in Milan, Italy

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Gold Team Nordic racers Simi Hamilton and Mike Sinnott competed Saturday, Jan. 14 in FIS World Cup sprint races at Milan, Italy. Hamilton, 24, qualified 23rd of 68 racers and finished 19th, the top American. Sinnott, 26, placed 68th in qualifying. The U.S. women's team of Kikkan Randall and Jessie Diggins placed second in Sunday's World Cup team sprint.

Girls' hockey in Idaho Falls

Wyoming proved to be Teton tough at the Idaho Falls Icebreaker girls' hockey tournament. In a field of five, Wyoming was undefeated, beating four opponents by a 28-2 score. Utah (3-1) was second, and Idaho Falls (2-2) third. Sun Valley and Salmon tied for fourth place, both with 0-3-1 records.

The Suns and Rapids skated to a 1-1 tie, with Sun Valley tying the game on a shorthanded goal in the third. Allison Fleutsch converted on a pass from Megan Johnston and Anik Zarkos. Goalie Gina Rickling finished the four-game series with 95 saves, with 50 coming against Wyoming.

Coach Eddie Grimes awarded the Most Valuable Player jersey to defender Abby Robideaux. Game pucks for outstanding play were earned by Allison Fleutsch, Autumn Fleutsch, Anik Zarkos, Scout Hutchinson and Sophie Nasvik. Rounding out the team were Abby Laughy, Audra Mary, Sydney Rogers and Abigail Benson.

The Suns will host their home tournament this weekend at the Sun Valley Indoor Ice Arena. McCall, Idaho Falls and Salmon will participate in round-robin play.

Mini World Cup slalom

Thirty-four Sun Valley Ski Education C-Home alpine ski racers took part in Sunday's slalom on Dollar Mountain. Team Norway earned 244 points on the day to stretch its lead to 562-493 over Sweden. Canada has 450, Team USA 433 and Austria 389 after two races.

Pond hockey results

The city of Ketchum and the Blaine County Recreation District staged the fifth annual Idaho Pond Hockey Classic at the Cristina Potters Ice Rink in Ketchum. Twelve "A" teams and seven "B" teams took part on a beautiful January day.

Winners of the "Golden Shovel" were: Old Toads over Stick Tease (4-3 in final) in the "B Division," and Mcgoo's Muiles over 5B Garage Band (5-2 in final) in the "A" division." About 120 people participated. There were teams from California, Las Vegas, Boise, Stanley and the Wood River Valley.

John Kearney of the Ketchum Parks Department gave special thanks to Hayden Beverage, Pepsi, SV Brewery, Buck Snort Root Beer and Falls Brand for their donations.

Josey earns silver at Rev Tour

Prodigy met potential Thursday, as Chase Josey of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation claimed a silver medal in men's snowboard halfpipe at the Revolution Tour staged at Northstar at Tahoe, California.

The 16-year-old Community School junior scored 77.2 points to finish second. SVSEF teammate Ryan Roemer, a Wood River High School junior, placeded sixth overall, scoring 73.2 points.

In women's halfpipe, SVSEF athletes Ali Appleton and Josie Bunce placed 11th and 14th, respectively.

Taylor Coiner is honored for swimming

Former Wood River High School and SV5B swimmer Taylor Coiner was selected as the Lewis & Clark College "Featured Student-Athlete of the Week" Jan. 12. A sophomore swimmer for the Portland (Ore.)-based Pioneers, economics major Coiner led her team with two first-place finishes in a dual meet against Occidental College Jan. 9. She won the 500 freestyle (5:35.25) and 50 backstroke (30.86 seconds). Head coach Chris Fantz said, "Taylor is having a fantastic sophomore season. She has proven herself a great distance swimmer in dual meets this season. And she brings a wonderful energy to our team."

Magic Valley Vandal Boosters meet Jan. 27

Blue Lakes Country Club in Twin Falls is the site for the 10th annual Vandal Winterfest Banquet for the University of Idaho and Magic Valley Vandal Boosters on Friday, Jan. 27. Social hour begins at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. The evening will include an auction and raffle fundraiser. Cost is $50 per person or $30 for those 30-and-younger. Expected to attend are UI president M. Duane Nellis and athletic director Rob Spear. There will be an award presentation for Magic Valley Booster of the Year. PeeWee hockey tournament

The Sun Valley Junior Suns 11-12 year old PeeWees hosted their Winter Invitational Tournament last weekend at Sun Valley Skating Center. Six teams from three states competed. Sun Valley went 2-1-1 in round-robin play making it to the championship game before falling to the Boise Hawks in the finals 5-1. Sun Valley beat Idaho falls and Salmon, tied the Salt Lake City Lightning and lost to Boise in round robin. Scoring for the Suns were Jett Erickson 4 goals, Ike Buxton 4, Henry Raff 2, Tiernan Naghsh 2, Ziggy Slanetz 1 and Alec Broman 1. James Everitt played stellar in goal.
