Chandler, Densmore on top in Skoch Cup

New to Masters ski racing, former Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation alpine racer Tyler Chandler, 23, emerged as the combined champion of the the 16th annual Skoch Cup on Baldy Sunday. The women's combined winner for three days of racing was Lisa Ann Densmore, 50, of Red Lodge, Mt.

Placing second in combined totals were two-time Skoch Cup king Matt Murphy of Ketchum and Beth Sarazine of Park City, Utah. In third place were three-time Skoch Cup champion John Campbell of Ketchum and Australian Katherine Suttor of Sun Valley.

Sponsored by Ketchum's Formula Sports and Heidi Flood, the Skoch Cup was staged Friday through Sunday on the Warm Springs side. Clear skies, crisp mountain air and challenging courses greeted racers. Both Chandler and Densmore were first-time Skoch Cup combined winners.

The second event on the 2012 Intermountain Division Masters race calendar, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) Masters alpine ski race featured 71 racers in Friday's super giant slalom on Greyhawk, 86 in Saturday's giant slalom on Hemingway and 38 in Sunday's slalom on Cozy.

On Friday, Murphy (55.00 seconds) clocked the fastest men's SG time ahead of 1990 U.S. men's downhill champion Skip Merrick (56.57), third-place Chandler (56.59), Campbell (56.94) and Jim Grossman (58.78). Jasmine Campbell, 20, paced the SG women in 1:00.97 ahead of Densmore (1:02.41), Sarazine (1:06.84), Donna Allen (1:07.14) and Suttor (1:08.76).

Leading women in giant slalom were: 1—Jasmine Campbell 1:40.23. 2—Lisa Ann Densmore 1:41.87. 3—Dana Alexandrescu 1:42.71. 4—Beth Sarazine 1:48.85. 5—Katherine Suttor 1:49.86. Top GS men were: 1—Nate Schwing 1:30.40 .2—Tyler Chandler 1:31.27. 3—Christopher Probert 1:32.07. 4—Matt Murphy 1:32.45. 5—John Campbell 1:34.84.

Chandler completed his combined triumph with the winning men's slalom time of 1:13.44 Sunday, .32 seconds ahead of Timothy Hill. Placing 3-4-5 were John Campbell, Matt Murphy and Bill Skinner. Top women were slalom winner Alexandrescu, runner-up Sarazine, third-place Densmore, fourth-place Suttor and fifth-place Allen.

Besides the aforementioned racers, weekend class winners included John Droege, Drury Cooper, Carl Fullman, Stephen Slivinski, John Reagle, Cliff Cunha, Virginia Reed, Joanne Davis, Nancy Auseklis, Randy Dubois, Heidi Flood, Mary Geron, Kirstin Kozlowski, Alan Rickers, Bob Sarchett and Rosemary Moschel.
