Wrestlers capture 38-30 meet over Gooding

Home debut

Wood River High School wrestlers bounced back with a 38-30 dual meet win over the Gooding Senators Tuesday after the Wolverines dropped a 58-19 Great Basin Conference dual meet to tough Minico in the Hailey home debut.

The Wolverines are now 3-1 in dual meets so far this season.

Coach Shawn Huntington of Wood River said, "We started slow and lost to (defending GBC champion) Minico, but I was pleased with the way we responded after the defeat. We need to focus on getting better starts to our matches, dual meets and tournaments."

Against Gooding, Wood River won seven of the 10 matches that were actually contested including three pins (Tim Boyle at 113, Tommy Bailey at 145 and Storm Anderson at 170) and two major decisions (Cooper Bailey 13-2 at 120 and Jared Anderson 12-2 at 132).

Senior Andrew Beck (126) and junior Thomas Heiden (182) also earned decision wins.

Minico (4 pins) won 11 of the 15 weight classes earlier in the evening, but there were bright spots for the Wolverines. Boyle, a junior, worked a 55-second pin at 113 pounds, junior Tommy Bailey captured a 15-7 major decision at 145 and Heiden won 10-3 at 182 pounds.

The Wolverines compete at the Buhl Invitational tournament starting today, Friday, Jan. 6 at 3:15 p.m. and continuing Saturday at 9 a.m. On Tuesday, Jan. 10, the Hailey wrestlers go to Wendell for a triangular meet with the host Trojans and Filer Wildcats.
