2-0 shutout gives Five Star a Utah crown

Gold Digger women’s hockey

Five Star Kitchen Designs goaltender Danae Commons recorded a 12-save shutout giving the Ketchum-based women's ice hockey team the championship of the Utah Ice Vixen Gold Digger tournament Saturday in Park City, Utah.

In the title game, Commons continued her mastery over the Park City Predators with a 2-0 victory giving Ketchum first place in the BB Division with a 3-0-1 record and 16-3 goals-against. Earlier in the tourney, the same two teams tied 0-0.

Scoring goals for the Idaho winners in the final game were Tess O'Sullivan, assisted by Sara Schroeder, and Laci Watkins. Coach was Jeff Ballou.

In other games, Five Star whipped the Ice Vixens 9-2 and outscored the Wings 5-1. The Ketchum women scored in each period in both of those games and piled up 58 shots.

Against the Ice Vixens, Bege Reynolds recorded a three-goal hat trick as Five Star poured it on with four-goal outbursts in the first and second stanzas. Schroeder issued three assists.

Ketchum's lead was only 2-1 against the Wings before a three-goal explosion in the third period put it away.

Here are the weekend scoring statistics for Five Star:

Sara Schroeder 2 goals/6 assists; Jini Griffith 3/3; Bege Reynolds 3/1; Laci Watkins 3/1; Trista Ballou 2/1; Tess O'Sullivan 1/2; Lisa Wood 1/2; Erin Griffith 1/1; and Kris Josey 0/2. Also skating for the winners were Nancy Parsons-Brown and Nellie Brown.
