When you're celebrating 40 years of Powder, it's go big or go home.

The Sun Valley-launched magazine has remained true to its roots by covering stories about skiing that's steep and deep.

From Friday, Dec. 9, through Sunday, Dec. 11, Powder magazine is throwing a party for fans, writers, photographers and skiers, who will descend on the area from all over North America.

"In the words of Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes, 'I've had the time of my life, and I owe it all to you," Powder Editor Derek Taylor stated in a press release. "We're partying in Sun Valley to celebrate Powder, the life-changing experience Powder magazine has been for so many over the last four decades, and you really should be there. Clothing optional."

Consider carefully then when dressing for the Powder Prom on Friday, Dec. 9, at the Limelight Room at Sun Valley Resort. A prom king and queen will be crowned based on dress and overall performance. The prize is a head-to-toe outerwear setup from Eddie Bauer First Ascent and a dream day of heli-skiing with Sun Valley Helicopter Ski Guides. Tickets are $20 and proceeds will go to the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation. Ages 18 and over.

On Saturday, Dec. 10, there will be an on-mountain hot dog contest. In the early evening, Ochi Gallery in the Colonnade Building in Ketchum will showcase 75 Powder covers from over the years, several of which will be available for purchase to raise money for the ski education foundation.

On Saturday night, Whiskey Jacques' in Ketchum will co-host with Red Bull. The band Old Death Whisper will play and there will be Red Bull drink specials. There will be a $5 cover charge.

Powder magazine was founded by brothers Dave and Jake Moe in 1972.

In an interview for the Idaho Mountain Express' recent Snow Edition, Jake Moe said the thought of starting the magazine came to him as he rode a chairlift up Bald Mountain.

The then ski patrolman said he wanted to let the world know "about the fantastic people of Sun Valley. These people are too cool and this new ski magazine should be all about the people."

And so it has been since, featuring high profile skiers like Bobbie Burns and Pam Street as well as the more low-profile like fellow patrollers Gary Stitzinger and John Dondero.

With Jake's idea and Dave's prowess with the printed page, the two rounded up the funding and created the publication, where the motto was "If you're not having fun, you're fired."

And so began the journal of "emotion versus information" and "photography versus text." That's still Powder today.
