Hailey taxpayers were bilked

The Dec. 2 edition of the Idaho Mountain Express featured an article titled "Hailey plans new historical exhibit" that let us know that $480,000 remains from the $3.5 million rodeo bond passed in 2010. I continue to be amazed by the lack of fiscal responsibility associated with the Hailey rodeo grounds, and the waste of taxpayer dollars.

At a time when the city-promised ice rink is on "long-term hold" (the only reason many people voted for the bond in the first place), and the empty rodeo grounds scream "unused white elephant" to anyone driving by, that the city will now spend nearly a half million dollars for an "interpretive center" is stunning. But hey, that "diorama featuring a timeline of history of the rodeo grounds" will certainly be a major pull for tourists, right? I know my family can't wait to see it.

As the working people of Hailey struggle to survive the economic downturn, we watch as our tax dollars are squandered on something that provides no real benefit to citizens, and may be used only during the mere handful of summer days that the grounds are actually in use. Outrageous.
