Galena Lodge stages Winterstart racing Sunday
Raring to go with your cross-country skiing?
If that's the case, don't miss the 39th annual Winterstart Nordic ski event on Sunday, Dec. 11 at Galena Lodge 23 miles north of Ketchum. Starting time is 11 a.m.
Offered at Senate Meadows near the lodge is a 2-kilometer (1.2-mile) course for 13-and-younger ($5 entry fee) and a 5.5k (3.4-mile) course for 14-and-older ($10). Race format is skating, four-person wave starts.
"The course is straightforward and not too difficult—one lap of the Galena Loop," said Rick Kapala, Nordic Program Director of the event sponsor, the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation.
"It's a great way to start the season," Kapala added. He thanked the Blaine County Recreation District for grooming, the people of Galena Lodge for serving as venue hosts, and the SVSEF parents for timing.
Day-of-race registration is Sunday from 9-10:30 a.m.
Youth basketball tourney Saturday in Hailey
As his senior project, Wood River High School three-sport athlete Braxton Parish is organizing a youth basketball tournament Saturday, Dec. 10 at Woodside Elementary School in Hailey. There will be Middle School and High School divisions. The tournament will begin at 12 noon Saturday and continue until all the games play out. It costs $30 per team. 2-1-1 weekend for Sun Valley high school hockey
Scoring 11 goals in four games, the Sun Valley boys' high school hockey team posted a 2-1-1 record during its home season-opening weekend against Skyline of Idaho Falls, Salmon and Idaho Falls Dec. 3-4 at Sun Valley Skating Center.
The Suns (6-7-4 season) trounced Skyline of Idaho Falls 6-1 Saturday and also nipped Salmon 4-3 in overtime Sunday morning. Sun Valley tied Salmon 1-1 in another game, and Idaho Falls captured a 3-0 victory over Sun Valley.
Erik Wilander and Liam Jablonski (2 shorthanded) each scored two goals against Skyline and goalie Willis Sanchez-duPont stopped 18 of 19 shots. A first-period one-timer by Eli Conrad, assisted by Tom Crosby on a nice backdoor pass, earned the Suns a 1-1 tie with Salmon. Goalie Cassidy Carson made 18 saves.
Sanchez-duPont saved 35 of 38 Salmon shots in Sunday's 4-3 OT victory. Riley Sibbach was credited with the game-winning goal after a scramble in front of the net. Mason Noyes and Drew Barsch earned assists. Cassidy Carson and Wilander also scored goals.

Last Friday night at Boise's Ice World, Sun Valley skated to a 0-0 tie with Timberline High School. The Boise team out-shot the young Suns 19-13, but Sun Valley's defense kept the game scoreless. Next up: Another league game at Ice World Friday, Dec. 9 against Canyon County, starting at 7 p.m.
Northside Conference volleyball All-Stars
High school volleyball players from Carey High School and three-time state champion Camas County of Fairfield have been honored by selection to the 2011 Northside Conference All-Star team. "Coach of the Year" was Shelli Schroeder of the state champion Mushers.
Joining Katelyn Peterson and Stephanie Moore of Camas County on the first team was Carey senior Micaela Adamson, along with Jessica Perron and Moriah Dill of Dietrich. Second-team picks included Larissa Stewart and Carlie Strom of Camas County.
On the honorable mention list, from the Carey Panthers, were Nicole Gomez, McKayla Mecham, Darby Northcott and Jaide Parke, plus Meredith Pintler of the Community School Cutthroats.
Ski Academy offers scholarships
The Sun Valley Ski Academy (SVSA) has announced scholarship opportunities for alpine, cross country , freestyle skiers and snowboarders for the 2012-13 academic year.
Scholarships are available for high school student-athletes. Awards vary in size, but may be as high as a full-tuition scholarship. Athletic achievement, academic effort and success, and commitment to community are used to determine scholarship recipients.
