Carey cage teams have winning night at Challis

Parke’s 27 leads girls to 52-48 win

Carey High School basketball teams traveled to Challis on Saturday and brought home victories by both the Panther girls (52-48) and boys (58-30).

For coach Dick Simpson's Carey boys (1-2), the 28-point victory was their first of the season. For the Panther girls (2-1), 5-7 junior guard Jaide Parke had a big night, the best of her three-year, 51-game career.

Parke tallied a career-best 27 points sparking Carey to its narrow four-point victory over a Vikings program that finished third in the State 1A Division 1 tourney last February with a glittering 22-2 record.

The visiting Panthers bolted off the bus with a 14-4 first-quarter lead and built it to 45-27 after three periods. A late 21-7 Challis run in the fourth quarter made the game close.

Carey coach Lane Durtschi said, "The girls worked hard in Challis. Our defense was really aggressive, best defense of the year. Both teams were missing a starter. Heck, we even finished with only four girls on the floor. It was a fun night."

Parke (8 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals) had the most fun, shooting 5-for-14 from 2-point range and 3-for-6 from 3-point territory plus 8-for-11 from the free throw line. She improved her career scoring total to 538 points in 51 games (10.5 ppg).

She had plenty of help.

Other contributors were senior Micaela Adamson (12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals), junior Morgan Parke (7 points, 3 steals), Ashley Durtschi (2 points), Angelica Zarate (2 points), Nicole Gomez (2 points) and Darby Northcvott (3 boards). The Panthers shot 32% from the field, and had 12 offensive rebounds out of 25 boards.

Challis leaders were Madisen Garlie (16 points, 10 rebounds) and K.C. Anderson (12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals).

The Carey girls entertain Oakley Friday, Dec. 9.

After losing its openers to Glenns Ferry and Hagerman, the reigning state champion Carey boys jumped to a 32-13 halftime lead at Challis and breezed to victory. Senior Jack Cenarrusa (four 3-pointers) had a big night with 16 points.

Other Panther contributors were Baley Barg (11 points), Dillon Cenarrusa (10), Chance Chavez (8), Sheldon Hansen (6), Garrett Lee (5) and Patrick Baird (2). Carey buried nine 3-pointers for the night in its best shooting night to date. Brandon Hamilton (12) topped Challis.

Friday night, the Hagerman Pirates put three players in double figures and played better at crunch time in a 54-51 non-conference victory that kept Carey winless on its homecourt early in the season. Carey led 43-40 after three periods but couldn't keep the lead.

Chavez (18 points, four 3-pointers) had the hot hand for the Panthers while Jack Cenarrusa, Dillon Cenarrusa and Barg chipped in with 10 points apiece in the loss.

The Panther boys host a strong Valley Vikings team Thursday, Dec. 8 at Carey. Valley graduated only two players from last year's State 2A tournament squad (15-10) that dropped its opening state game 56-39 to eventual champ Melba. Coach Steve Hunter's Valley team opened its current season with 68-40 and 72-33 routs of Hansen and Raft River.

Oakley (0-2) arrives in Carey Friday, having lost at home to Hagerman 40-32 last Thursday.
