Suns host McCall for first games Dec. 16-17

Whiskey’s benefit starts kickoff weekend

The 37th winter season of the Sun Valley Suns men's senior hockey team is scheduled to begin Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16-17 with the visit of the McCall Mountaineers to Sun Valley Skating Center. Opening faceoffs are 7 p.m. each night.

Cody Proctor of the Suns announced Monday that the team's "Kickoff Weekend" will begin Thursday, Dec. 15 with a fundraising benefit starting at 6 p.m. at Whiskey Jacques in Ketchum. Money raised will help the Suns finance their 20-game 2011-12 hockey campaign.

Two live bands will provide music. There will be raffle prizes and memorabilia that will be of interest to fans.

Sun Valley (576-233-29 in 36 years) has a 20-game season schedule including 18 games at home and two games away at the Utah Grizzlies in January. The season continues through the first weekend of March.

Film director/hockey goalie Bobby Farrelly, who maintains a home in Ketchum, has confirmed the return of his Boston (Mass.) Gutter Snipes for the weekend of Jan. 27-28. The Aspen (Colo.) Leafs will provide a ski resort opponent Jan. 6-7.

And the Christmas/New Year's holiday will offer three games—the annual Future Suns exhibition Wednesday, Dec. 21 to benefit Sun Valley Youth Hockey, and the visit of the Utah Rebels Dec. 30-31 to raise money for Hailey Ice.

Check next week's Express for more details about the 2011-12 Suns. The team (10-6-0 last winter) started practices Wednesday, Nov. 30. Among those returning are last year's top scorer Bryan O'Connell (17 goals and 14 assists, 31 points).
