Sports summary


High school hockey home games this weekend

The Sun Valley boys' high school hockey team coached by Chris Benson, Bob Crosby and Tim Jeneson will open its 2011-12 home season Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3-4 with games against Idaho Falls and Salmon at Sun Valley Skating Center. Sun Valley plays at 12 noon and 5 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Sun Valley went 2-1-1 in four games played in a matter of just 38 hours Nov. 12-13 during a high school tournament in Idaho Falls. The young Suns defeated Idaho Falls 3-1 and Skyline 2-1, drew 3-3 with Bonneville-Hillcrest, and fell 3-1 in the final game to Idaho Falls.

Assistant captain Liam Jablonski scored twice and assistant captain Mason Noyes once in the 3-3 tie. Goalie Cassidy Carson saw 21 shots and made 18 saves. Drew Barsch (power play), captain Tom Crosby and Karel Kaiser (power play) tallied in the 3-1 Suns victory, goalie Willis Sanchez-duPont stopping 21 shots.

In a Sunday morning 6 a.m. eye-opener, Noyes (assists by Eli Conrad and Cameron Jenner) and Conrad (Crosby) lifted Sun Valley over Skyline 2-1, goalie Carson making 16 saves. Riley Sibbach cashed in on a rebound of Hagan Barsch's shot for the long goal in the 3-1 loss. Other Suns were Rickie Jeneson (2 assists), Peter MacMillan, Sam Ruddell, Jack Swanson and Erik Wilander.

In a Nov. 18 league game at Boise, the Suns dropped a 5-2 decision to Boise High. Crosby and Sibbach scored goals, and Sanchez-duPont assisted, as Sun Valley skated only eight. Drew Barsch played well.

Moellenberg skates at regionals

Community School junior Shayna Moellenberg has represented the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club at the Pacific Coast Sectionals for the third consecutive year.

Moellenberg traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah Nov. 15-19 as the reigning Northwest Regional Senior Ladies Silver Medalist. She successfully completed several difficult jumps and jump combinations and was awarded extra points for her choreographed spirals, finishing 11th in Senior Ladies.

Her previous figure skating titles include Northwest Regional Novice Ladies Silver Medalist in 2010 and Northwest Regional Junior Ladies Champion in 2011. She has worked hard for her accomplishments.

Moellenberg is a member of the Sun Valley Summer Ice Show ensemble cast and is also a recurring soloist in Sun Valley's "Christmas Eve on Ice: The Nutcracker" performance.

Ski Club winter season kickoff

The Sun Valley Ski Club (622-3003) holds its 2011-12 winter season kickoff party Sunday, Dec. 4 from 6-9 p.m. in the Sun Valley Lodge Dining Room. Members and guests are invited, for $38 per person. B+ Hockey update

Chris Peterson scored twice while Rod Watson and Kevin Bracken added single goals leading Aardvarks past Islanders 4-2 in Sunday's Sun Valley Senior B+ League action at Sun Valley Skating Center. Jeff Ballou and Trista Ballou chipped in assists for the winners. For the Isles, Georgia Hutchinson and Brad Musbach lit the light, and Alan Reynolds assisted.

Sunday's other games ended in ties, Flounders 3-3 with Sharks and Hutch's Bad Dogs 3-3 with the Vipers.

Bryan Speth, Ken Pratt and John Ellison Jr. scored for the Flounders, assisted by Jim Slanetz and Dan Choma. Stashing home goals for the Sharks were Dave Gittins, Chris Roberts and Ben Talmadge, with Pete Prekeges, Nic Thomas and Greg Townley assisting.

Hutch's Steve McCoy (1 goal, 2 assists) led his team in the deadlock, with Dan Gorham and Josh Green assisting. Scoring for the Vipers were Scott Seaward, Jim Laski (1 assist) and John Baker (1 assist).
