Thursday, Nov. 24, is the planned kickoff day for Sun Valley Resort's winter season.

"As of today, our goal is still Thanksgiving Day," Jack Sibbach, Sun Valley Resort spokesman, said Thursday. Skiers and boarders can take to Bald Mountain on the River Run and Warm Springs sides.

"Top to bottom, on both sides of Baldy," Sibbach said.

Sibbach said the resort had not yet determined which runs will be open. Challenger, Lookout Express and Lower River Run chairlifts will be operating, with more to follow as conditions permit.

Dollar Mountain also will welcome visitors, at least on Quarter Dollar and the magic carpet kids' lift.

"Our plan for Dollar Mountain is to run it through Sunday, Nov. 27, close it and reopen it Dec. 10 for the rest of the season," Sibbach said.

Some terrain park features on Dollar and River Run will be open, he said. Additional features could open, depending on snow.

"All this is predicated on help from Mother Nature," he said. "But we're off to a good start."

What Mother Nature doesn't provide, the resort will.

"Snowmaking will continue as we need it for the product to be first-class," Sibbach said.

Lodges open on Thanksgiving Day will be Warm Springs Lodge, River Run Lodge, Lookout and Carol's Dollar Mountain Lodge.

Skiers and boarders wanting to take to the slopes before lift operations begin are encouraged to go to the Warm Springs side. The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, in partnership with Sun Valley Co., is holding an alpine training camp at River Run from Nov. 19-23. Nearly 80 racers from around Idaho and the region are expected to attend.

"We encourage people to recreate on the Warm Springs side of the mountain," Sibbach said. "People recreating and dogs don't mix with the kids skiing."

This week's snowfall, the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend and a full season of snow sports ahead are creating enthusiasm.

"We're excited about the winter," Sibbach said. "There's a really good buzz around the community."

Sun Valley Resort will hold a season-opener event Thursday, Nov. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lower River Run side of Bald Mountain. The resort will display new grooming machines, which people can climb in and check out. Details to come.
