High school hockey drops puck in Boise

Sun Valley debuts in first tourney

The Sun Valley boys' high school hockey team coached by Chris Benson debuted its 2011-12 tournament season Oct. 28-30 by going 1-2-1 and scoring 11 goals during the Boise High School tourney at Ice World.

All of Sun Valley's four games were closely contested. Goalkeeper Willis Sanchez-duPont (66 saves) was a big factor in the team' success.

Bonneville/Hillcrest of Idaho Falls slipped home three goals in the third period to beat Sun Valley 4-2 Friday night. On Saturday morning, the young Suns downed Skyline of Idaho Falls 5-1. Borah/Capital of Boise nipped Sun Valley 4-3 later Saturday. Sunday, Skyline and Sun Valley skated to a 1-1 tie in the 5-6 seed game.

Assistant captain Mason Noyes and Eli Conrad each had three goals and contributed three assists for the weekend. Other scorers were captain Tom Crosby (3 goals/1 assist), assistant captain Liam Jablonski (2/1), Erik Wilander (0/2), Riley Sibbach (0/1) and Cameron Jenner (0/1).

Other players were Drew Barsch and Hagan Barsch on defense along with forwards Rickie Jeneson and Sam Ruddell.

In the Bonneville/Hillcrest game, Noyes scored twice late in the third period after Sun Valley fell behind 4-0 after a three-goal Idaho Falls assault beginning the third stanza. Sibbach assisted on one Noyes goal. Sanchez-duPont stopped 17 of 21 shots.

Conrad opened the scoring against Skyline on Saturday, assisted by Crosby. Jablonski's first of two goals, unassisted, made it 2-0 and Skyline narrowed its deficit to 2-1 after one.

Conrad fed Jablonski toward the end of the second for a 3-1 lead. Sun Valley added insurance goals in the third period by Crosby (Conrad, Jenner) and Noyes (Wilander). Sanchez-duPont stopped 15 of 16 shots.

Saturday's Borah-Sun Valley game could have gone either way. Shots were even (23 SV, 20 Boise) and the scores reflected it—1-1 after one and 2-2 after two. The eventual winner came on a Borah power play for a 4-2 lead. Crosby's second goal of the game made the final 4-3. Conrad also scored. Credited with assists were Noyes (2), Wilander and Conrad.

Although Sun Valley out-shot Skyline 23-11 in Sunday's game, Skyline's goalie constantly frustrated the resort skaters. It was scoreless until the third period, when Conrad threw a shot on net from the near-sideboards that caught the Skyline goalie off guard. Assists went to Noyes and Jablonski. Later, Skyline equalized with a power-play tally.

Sanchez-duPont made 19 saves against Borah and 15 against Skyline.
