NexStage Presents

The third in a trilogy of dark comedies by Irish playwright

By JENNIFER LIEBRUM
Express Staff Writer

Get another peek into the darkly hilarious mind of playwright Martin McDonagh when nexStage Presents performs a free reading Tuesday, Nov. 8. at Ketchum's nexStage Theatre.

McDonagh, 41, is a filmmaker and screenwriter as well as one of the most important living Irish playwrights around. He is perhaps most widely associated with his most recent film, "In Bruges," featuring Colin Farrell. He was awarded the Critics' Circle Theatre Awards for Most Promising Playwright in 1996. He's currently working on a new stage musical with composer Tom Waits and director Robert Wilson.

"Skull in Connemara" is the third of The Leenane Trilogy that nexStage actors will animatedly read before a live audience. The previous hilarious and provocative shows were "The Beauty Queen of Leenane" and "The Lonesome West."

In this show, local stars Claudia McCain, Scott Creighton, Steve D'Smith and Will Hemmings are directed by Jon Kane.

The story centers on a Connemara man who has the job of exhuming skeletons in an overcrowded graveyard. His newest customer is the wife he was accused of killing years before.

"This is one little crazy town in Ireland where there is always a lot of murder and mayhem," Kane said. "He is one of the hottest playwrights in the world and one of the funniest I've ever read. The audience will get a kick out of it."
