The Carey Panthers rode the hot passing arm of junior quarterback Jordan Dilworth to a lopsided 56-0 home win over the North Valley Academy Patriots in the regular-season eight-man football finale Thursday, Oct. 27 on the Carey gridiron.
Dilworth (9-for-12, 183 yards) threw five touchdown passes in the first quarter alone as unbeaten Carey (9-0, 5-0 Sawtooth Conference North) posted its fifth shutout of a dominating fall campaign. In the last two weeks, Dilworth is 17-for-22 for 436 yards and eight TD passes.
Carey led 34-0 after the first period and ended the game on the 45-point-at-halftime mercy rule when sophomore Luis Garcia dashed home from 13 yards out with no time left on the clock in the second period.
Now, reigning State 1A Division 2 champion Carey will take the first step in its title defense by hosting Sawtooth Conference South runner-up North Gem of Bancroft (4-5) on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. at Derrick Parke Memorial Field.
Carey, winner of 16 consecutive games over two seasons, defeated North Gem 54-6 at Bancroft on Sept. 30. The Panthers are averaging 50.0 ppg in nine contests and have yielded only six touchdowns all season. North Gem is coming off a 58-20 win at Jackpot (3-5) last Friday.
Against winless North Valley (0-6), Carey rushed for 186 yards and passed for 183 more in piling up a 465-39 advantage in total yardage over the first-year varsity gridders from Gooding. Baley Barg caught five passes for 87 yards and two Panther touchdowns. He returned three punts for 60 yards.
Scoring twice was Garcia, while Jack Cenarrusa, Charlie Rivera, Chance Chavez and Tori Alvarez added single TDs. Sophomore Alvarez (9 rushes, 84 yards) and Garcia (6 rushes, 75 yards) put in some good time carrying the pigskin.
The Panthers played without junior lineman Garrett Lee, who suffered a shoulder separation at Mackay Oct. 21.
If Carey is able to keep its winning streak alive over North Gem Saturday, the Panthers will advance into the semi-finals against the winner of Friday's game between South Division winner Castleford (7-2) and North Division runner-up Dietrich (5-3).
That semi-final game will be played either Nov. 11 or 12 at Holt Arena in Pocatello, Carey athletic director Lee Cook said.
The Mackay Miners and Lighthouse Christian played two quarters Monday, Oct. 31 in Carey to determine the third state qualifier out of the 4th District. Lighthouse (7-3) prevailed 48-6 over Mackay (4-6) for its fifth win in six games and will now face Salmon River of Riggins (6-2) Saturday, Nov. 5 in another quarterfinal contest.
