Runners toe the line for state cross country

High school cross country runners from Hailey's Wood River High School and the Community School of Sun Valley are headed for Boise this weekend for the Idaho High School Activities Association's state cross country meets.

Four individuals from Wood River and three from the Community School have qualified to compete in the State 4A and 2A cross country footraces Saturday, Oct. 29 at Eagle Island State Park west of Boise.

The IHSAA state meet was last staged at Eagle Island in 2008. It was conducted in Soda Springs last October and in northern Idaho in October 2009.

State qualifiers are: From WRHS: Seniors Ben Stout and Corrine Smith, junior Chase England and freshman Alexis Gonzalez. And from Community School: Seniors Morgan Atkinson and Gray Riedinger and junior Maranda Stopol.

Smith of 4A Wood River (16th 2010, 39th 2009, 44th 2008) and Atkinson of the 2A Community School (37th, 44th, 41st) are making their fourth visits to the state cross country meet.

Going for the third times are Stout (22nd, 65th) and Stopol (36th 2A, 67th 4A). Two-time qualifiers are England (13th) and Riedinger (33rd).

The eight separate races Saturday will be chip-timed. There is a $5 parking fee for spectators. Take the Eagle Road Exit 46 off I-84 west of Boise and head north on S.H. 55 towards Eagle and McCall. Turn right on South Eagle Rd., left on East Chinden, right onto North Linder and right to West Hatchery.

Race order on the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile course) is:

11 a.m. 2A girls; 11:30 a.m. 3A girls; 12 noon 2A boys; 12:30 p.m. 3A boys; 1 p.m. 4A girls; 1:30 p.m. 5A girls; 2 p.m. 4A boys; and 2:30 p.m. 5A boys. The awards ceremonies will be conducted after the boys' races in each classification.
