Vote no on council-manager

My husband and I have lived in west Ketchum for more than 40 years. Of course, we have seen multiple changes in our community, and have championed or opposed many political causes. What concerns me about the latest political turmoil is that there appears to be more to it than meets the eve. Many of the Ketchum residents who are behind the change to council-manager form of government are the same people who unsuccessfully attempted the recall of Mayor Randy Hall. These same people were vocally against locating the YMCA in Ketchum with statements like "There are very few children living in Ketchum, so why should we have the Y here?" These people have run for office in the past to no avail.

It is curious to me that these same folks are insistent that we need to change our form of government, and Idaho law dictates that in the event of such a change, all current elected officials are immediately removed from office. This does not appear to be about getting a better form of government, but rather about getting their way.

Political debate is the foundation of our democracy. Election to public office is won by the majority vote. Policy differences aside, Ketchum's mayor-council form of government works well and a change is costly and unwarranted. Let's keep an honest political discourse going and use the power of our regular elections, not quirky Idaho statutes, to vote our city leaders into office. Vote no on the council-manager form of government for Ketchum.
