Carey spikers go extra time with Richfield

Long match to Panthers, state bid falls short

Carey High School volleyball rooters spent a long evening at Dietrich last Thursday watching the Panther spikers win a thrilling match with Richfield—then falling just short in a state tournament bid.

The No. 6-seeded Panthers spent nearly three hours on the court before walking off with a 25-23, 31-33, 25-21, 19-25, 16-14 triumph over No. 5 Richfield in the consolation bracket of the Northside Conference tourney on the Blue Devil hardwoods.

By taking their second straight five-game win over Richfield, coach Kathy Whitworth's Panthers (7-13) gave themselves a chance at qualifying for the upcoming State 1A Division 2 tournament as the third seed out of the Northside.

Yet No. 3 seed Lighthouse Christian Academy was the fresher squad, and Lighthouse ended (17-7) Carey's season 25-23, 25-18, 25-19. Later Thursday, Dietrich defeated Lighthouse for second place. Unbeaten Camas County won the tournament title 25-18, 25-22, 25-13 over Dietrich earlier Thursday.

Coach Whitworth said, "We played our best volleyball all year Thursday on our final night of the season. The girls were tired—playing nearly three hours against Richfield and having long, long volleys against Lighthouse—but I can't complain, they gave it their all.

"Micaela (Adamson) and McKayla (Mecham) did some great hitting, Nicole (Gomez) had a bunch of assists, and McKayla and Jaide (Parke) had lots of digs for us. We're a little disappointed not to be going to state, but I'm proud of them.

"It might have been a different story for us against Lighthouse if we hadn't played that long in the Richfield match."

Two-time defending State 1A Division 2 champ Camas County of Fairfield (23-0) opens the State 1A Division 2 tourney Friday, Oct. 28 at Lewiston High School with a 3 p.m. match against 2008 and 2006 state champ Garden Valley.

At last year's state tournament in Burley, Camas County needed five games in the semi-final match to hold off eventual third-place Garden Valley. Then, the Mushers defeated North Gem in the title match.

Two years ago, also at Lewiston, Camas County behind its strong hitting Katelyn Peterson won its first state championship in four games over Dietrich. College-bound Peterson will be making her final high school appearance this weekend, and the Mushers hope it is another winning one.
