Hailey soccer teams shoot for state

Girls win opener 13-0, Burley blanks boys in OT

The road to the State 4A soccer tournament got a lot tougher for the Wood River High School boys' varsity soccer team, while the Hailey girls advanced to another championship game of the Great Basin Conference tournament.

Such were the developments in Saturday's second round of the GBC boys' and girls' tournaments at Sunway Soccer Complex in Twin Falls.

The No. 2-seeded Wood River girls, aiming for their eighth consecutive GBC tournament title and 17th straight trip to state soccer, walloped the No. 6-seeded Minico Spartans 13-0 Saturday with senior co-captain Sloan Storey (20 goals, 15 in the last 7 games) scoring five more goals.

Adding two goals apiece were Erin Murphy and Samantha Sutton. Those with single goals were Haley Montgomery (17 goals), Rory Cole, Olivia Thornton and Tatum Morell.

The Wood River girls (11-2-2) advanced into Tuesday's GBC title game at Sunway Soccer Complex against the No. 1-seeded Twin Falls Bruins (10-3-2). The two teams tied twice, 1-1, this season. Wood River nipped Twin Falls 4-3 in last year's championship on the same field.

If Wood River lost to Twin Falls Tuesday, the Wolverines will host an elimination game Thursday, Oct. 13 at 4:30 p.m. on the Hailey field against either Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls or Jerome. Winner of Tuesday's title game advances directly to the State 4A meet Oct. 20 in Caldwell.

Hailey boys beat Canyon Ridge 2-1

The No. 2-seeded Hailey boys (7-5-2) dropped a thrilling 1-0 overtime game to No. 3 Burley (7-6-4) Saturday at Sunway and consequently dropped into the consolation bracket of the six-team tournament—their hopes dashed for a second straight GBC tournament crown.

Outstanding were both senior goalkeepers, Dylan Carey of Wood River and Juan Deleon of Burley. Carey stopped a first-half penalty kick to keep the tight game scoreless.

Wood River coach Luis Monjaras said, "It was an awesome game. The boys played extremely well. They showed respect, leadership and most importantly, sportsmanship.

"It was very intense. Such games come down to whom creates an opportunity. We had ours but did not capitalize. Now, it's on to 'Plan B.' A longer road, but doable. I'd like to point out the outstanding play of our defense in the Burley game, especially Dylan Carey."

By ending their six-game winless streak to Wood River including a 2-1 loss in Hailey this year and 0-0 tie at Burley, coach Wes Nyblade's Bobcats advanced to host Tuesday's championship game against No. 4 Jerome (8-2-5), a shootout winner over top-seeded Minico (8-5-3) Saturday. Wood River now leads the intense 18-season Burley soccer rivalry 17-16-5.

Wood River stayed alive Monday in the pouring rain on its home field with a 2-1 win that ousted No. 5 Canyon Ridge (10-9-1). Junior Trevor Brand scored on a penalty kick in the 28th minute and sophomore Stephen Pfeiffer converted a one-timer on a deflected ball inside the box putting Wood River ahead 2-0 at halftime.

The Wolverines traveled to Rupert for another elimination game Tuesday against Minico. The winner of Tuesday's Wood River-Minico game will play the loser of Jerome-Burley on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 4:30 p.m. If those Thursday opponents are Jerome and Wood River, the Wolverines host the game because they're the higher seed.

"One game at a time. We are ready to face anyone," said third-year coach Monjaras.

It was no surprise Jerome and Burley played in Tuesday's championship game. The two teams were the GBC championship game finalists each year from 2006-09, Jerome winning three straight titles from 2007-09 and Burley landing on top from 2004-06. Wood River interrupted the dominance in 2010.
