539 prep runners dodge raindrops in Twin

At Canyon Springs Golf Course

Senior Ben Stout led the 26 Wood River High School cross country runners competing in the rain Wednesday at the Dani Bates Invitational 3.1-mile footrace along the Canyon Springs Golf Course in Twin Falls.

Stout (16:44) finished seventh of 137 boys' varsity runners behind winner Erik Harris (16:09) of Twin Falls. Richfield's Sasha Kent (20:08, 7th) and Wood River's Corrine Smith (21:31, 44th) were among the girls' varsity leaders.

Boise High School (boys) and Mountain View (girls) were varsity team winners. Wood River's boys placed 10th out of 20 boys' varsity teams.

Wood River coach Monte Brothwell said the Hailey team wasn't at full strength because of sickness, but most of those who competed had personal-best times for the season.

There were 539 varsity and junior varsity runners from 22 schools including the Community School and Camas County in Wednesday's meet.
