WRHS swimmers keep the pressure on

Relay wins help girls win at ISU

Wood River High School's swim team kept applying the pressure as the girls' and boys' squads faced off against 15 high school teams and over 230 swimmers during the District 25 Invitational Saturday, Sept. 24 at Idaho State University's Reed Complex in Pocatello.

Taking all three relays, the WRHS girls won the meet, outscoring their closest competitor, Idaho Falls High School, by over 100 points. Here are the winning relay teams:

200-yard medley (2:01.10) with Kaedi Fry, Lena Friesen, Tayler Bates and Colby Werley; 200-yard freestyle (1:48.26) with Colby Werley, Tori Emerick, Kaedi Fry and Elizabeth Fry; 400-yard freestyle (4:00.41) Tayler Bates, Tori Emerick, Lena Friesen and Elizabeth Fry.

Wood River's boys captured third place as a team in an impressive field. That finish included thirds in 200 and 400 freestyle relays. In the 200 free (1:44.64) were Gus Kimball, Adam Potts, Logan Johnston and JT Sutton. In the 400 free were Gus Kimball, Adam Potts, Luke Verst and JT Sutton.

Coach Brian Gallagher said he was pleased. He said, "Both teams posted good swims for this date in our high school season. The kids have their work cut out for them to swim personal best times every time they race, but with continued focus they are up to the task."

He gave high marks to the teams' individual winners at Pocatello. They were:

Junior Tayler Bates 2:10.93 in 200 free; senior JT Sutton 1:58.05 in 200 free and 52.14 in 100 free; junior Lena Friesen 56.27 in 100 free; and freshman Kaedi Fry 1:15.63 in 100 breast. The coach also singled out commendable second places by junior Gus Kimball in both 200 IM and 100 back; by senior Adam Potts in 500 free; by Kaedi Fry in 100 fly; and by junior Lena Friesen in 100 back.

The Wolverines travel Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Twin Falls High School Invitational.
