Shadow, the Hailey Police Department's drug-sniffing black Labrador, is being given credit in a methamphetamine bust Saturday evening on Main Street in Hailey.

The suspect, Jesus George Ayala, a 23-year-old Bellevue man, remained incarcerated Tuesday in the Blaine County jail on $10,000 bond. He has been charged with felony possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor driving under the influence.

Hailey police Lt. Steve England said Ayala was arrested around 6:30 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Main and Cedar streets in Hailey after a patrol office pulled him over for alleged "erratic driving."

"Once he pulled him over, he detected suspicious activity from the driver and the passenger," England said.

Shadow and his handler, Sgt. Derek Stewart, were called to the scene, England said, and "Shadow alerted on the vehicle," giving police probable cause for a search.

Ayala allegedly had a "small amount" of methamphetamine in his possession, England said.

The passenger, identified as Nicholas Dennis, 32, of Rigby, was also arrested. England said Dennis was taken into custody for allegedly possessing drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor, and on an outstanding warrant from Bonneville County charging him with probation violation.
