Cutthroat soccer teams have lofty HDSC perches

High in the ranks as season winds down

The Community School boys' soccer team is enjoying the view atop the High Desert Soccer Conference after several years languishing in the middle of one of Idaho's most competitive loops for small schools.

Strong on defense and improving up front, coach Richard Whitelaw's Cutthroats (5-2-2, 5-1-1 league) have yielded only seven goals in nine games. They earned their third shutout of the season Tuesday with a 4-0 home win over Declo's Hornets at Browning Field.

Cutthroat goal scorers were sophomore Bobby Corker, junior Cameron Jenner, senior Cassidy Carson and senior co-captain Colin Waycott with his first varsity goal. Corker's goal was his first as well. Goalkeeper Tom Crosby (2 saves) was relatively untested.

"Man of the Match" was freshman Roger Figge.

Tuesday's Cutthroat victory, combined with Gooding's 4-3 upset win at Buhl, lifted the Community School into sole possession of first place in the seven-team league with 16 points. Buhl (5-2-3, 4-1-2 for 14 points) suffered its first league loss and second straight setback on the heels of last Saturday's 5-1 loss at Jerome.

The Cutthroats hosted reigning State 3A champion Wendell (1-5-2, 1-4-2) Thursday and will visit Bliss today. Wendell battled to a 3-3 draw with Filer (4-3-2, 2-2-2) on Tuesday. Next big game for the Cutthroats is Monday, Oct. 3 at home with resurgent Gooding (2-2-3, 2-2-3). Gooding won the State 3A soccer championship in 2009.

Girls blank Declo 10-0

Coach Kelly Feldman's Community School girls (8-2-1, 6-1-1 league) stayed unbeaten in their last nine games with a 10-0 High Desert Soccer Conference romp over the Declo Hornets Tuesday at Sagewillow.

It was the sixth shutout of the season for the Cutthroats, who have outscored opponents 68-12. Seven different scorers contributed to the lopsided win.

Netting two goals apiece were sophomore Hayley Murach, senior Noe Garing and freshman Josie Allison (1 assist). Single goals came from sophomores Whitney Engelmann (2 assists) and Hannah Dies (1 assist), and junior Maddie Caraluzzi.

In her first start, Katie Dumke (1 assist) completed the scoring with a penalty kick and her first varsity goal.

The Cutthroats (7-2-1, 5-1-1) stayed three points behind Buhl (8-0-2, 7-0-1) for the top league ranking. Buhl defeated Gooding 6-0 Tuesday and the Tribe visited Filer Thursday. Filer (4-6-0, 4-3-0) was a 4-1 winner over Wendell Tuesday.
