Hunters kill 2 wolves in central Idaho

1 wolf is member of depredating pack

A Carey hunter killed a wolf in the Southern Mountains Zone over the weekend, one of two wolves killed in the zone since the season started Aug. 30.

Randy Smith, regional game manager for the Magic Valley office of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, said Tuesday that the most recent kill occurred Saturday at the head of the Little Wood River.

The young black and gray female wolf reportedly weighed under 100 pounds and was killed with a compound bow. Smith said the wolf was a member of the Bell Mountain pack.

The same pack was subject to a control action on Aug. 30, when Idaho Wildlife Services killed three adult wolves that had been implicated in cattle depradations on the Flat Top Ranch and the Cove Ranch near Carey.

Smith said the wolf shot Saturday was not radio-collared, meaning there is at least one remaining radio-collared female in the pack.

The other wolf, a black male, was killed in the Stanley Basin earlier this month. According to department spokesman Niels Nokkentved, 16 wolves have been reported killed by hunters statewide so far this season.
