Police investigate landscape truck accident

Driver reports he was stung by ‘bees or wasps’

Ketchum police are investigating an accident last week that damaged trees and street signs near the Big Wood Golf Course and sent the driver of a Big Wood Landscape pickup to St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center.

The hospital reported Tuesday that Paul F. McCarthy, a 52-year-old Hailey resident, was treated and released on Thursday. The accident occurred earlier that day shortly before 2 p.m.

McCarthy reported that he was "stung by bees or wasps prior to the accident."

According to a police report, McCarthy was southbound on state Highway 75 near the golf course when he swerved into the northbound lane, "swiping" the front end of another vehicle. McCarthy then ran off the road, hitting trees and street signs until his vehicle struck a large pillar and stopped near the north end of the Ketchum Cemetery.

Police reported that the driver of the vehicle struck by McCarthy was not injured. She was identified as Carol J. Lewis, no age or address available but described as a part-time resident of the Wood River Valley.

Police reported that blood and urine samples were obtained from McCarthy for analysis at the Idaho State Police forensics laboratory to determine if alcohol was a factor in the accident.
