Bigwood Open Golf Tournament this weekend

Sign up for the Bigwood Open Golf Tournament set for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10-11 at Bigwood Golf Course at Thunder Spring north of Ketchum. Practice rounds are Friday followed by the 36-hole tourney for men and women. The tournament is open to the first 48 players with established handicaps. Cost of $100 per player ($40 for Bigwood season pass holders) includes Friday's round.

Engen first in Cascade Lake duathlon

Ketchum's Jon Engen (1.42:21) placed first of 18 Olympic Distance Duathlon athletes at the 31-mile distance and won the Men's 50-54 age class in the 2011 Cascade Lake Triathlon/Duathlon/10k and 5k Run event held Saturday, Aug. 27. The event was held at Lake Cascade State Park near McCall north of Boise.

Engen's split times were 20:22 for the first 3.1-mile run, 59:57 for the 24.8-mile bike ride and 19:56 for the second 3.1-mile run. He was four minutes ahead of Wilhelm Northrop of Boise (1.46:21), with splits of 20:21, 1.03:08 and 20:44.

Ketchum's Darlene Young was the second female finisher and won the Women's 50-54 age class with a finishing time of 54:33 for the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) distance.

Valley Club hole-in-one

Labor Day weekend brought good fortune to Lou Ann Terry, who on Saturday, Sept. 3 made a hole-in-one on The Valley Club's South Course second hole, Red Tees, using a 4-hybrid. Sean Terry witnessed the accomplishment.

Bowling leagues start next week

The 2011-12 league bowling season at Bellevue's Mountain Sun Lanes begins the week of Monday, Sept. 12. There will be a recruiting barbecue party Thursday, Sept. 8 starting at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Mountain Sun Lanes convenience store, followed by bowling to 10 p.m.

Spirit n' Motion Athletic School schedules fall classes

Registration is ongoing for fall classes starting Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Spirit n' Motion located across from Power Engineers at 3950 Woodside Blvd. in Hailey and the Wood River Community YMCA. The program's system is now fully online sign-ups.

Classes include the Gymnastics Competitive Team, Soldier Mountain All-Stars Competitive Cheerleaders, Pre-School and Recreational Gymnastics, Tumbling and more. Any Monday classes begin Sept. 12.

The school's cheerleading includes the non-competitive Cheer Stars (ages 6-and-up, $50 a month) plus these competitive programs: Green Emeralds (ages 3-5, $50 month), Silver Stars (6-11, $115 month) and Black Diamonds (9-14, $140 per month).

Cancer for the Cure golf winners

Juli Webb of Ketchum and former Ketchum Recreation Director Terry Tracy of Twin Falls won the Ladies Cancer for the Cure fundraising golf tournament out of 70 entries with a score of 74 gross, 59 net. The member-guest two-ball tourney was Aug. 17 at Jerome Golf and Country Club.

Registration for Girls on the Run is underway

Sign-ups are being accepted for the Girls on the Run fall program that runs from Sept. 12-Nov. 19. After-school programs are being offered at all Blaine County School District elementary schools, along with Wood River Middle School. Visit girlsontherunwrv.org or call Mary Fauth 788-7863.
