The Carey Panthers (2-0) stayed unbeaten on the young 2011 prep eight-man football season Friday night with a 20-0 victory over the Raft River Trojans on the Malta gridiron.
Defense paved the way for coach Lane Kirkland's reigning State 1A Division 2 champion Panthers, who won their second of three straight games against 1A Division 1 rivals. Raft River fell to 0-2.
Scoring for Carey were Dillon Cenarrusa on a fumble return in the first period, Charlie Rivera on a 35-yard run in the second quarter and Jack Cenarrusa on a 39-yard pass from quarterback Jordan Dilworth in the fourth quarter.
Carey's defense stopped the determined Raft River offense three times in the red zone.
Next up for Carey is a home non-conference game against the unbeaten Challis Vikings (2-0) on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. at Derrick Parke Memorial Field in Carey. Challis opened its campaign with a 40-36 home win over Mackay Aug. 26 and won by forfeit over Clark County of Dubois last Friday.
The Panthers haven't played Challis before in football. The Vikings were 6-3 last fall with a 38.7 ppg offense, but Challis was 3-6 in 2009 and 2-7 in 2008. In another game last Friday, Mackay (1-1) defeated Rockland by a 22-0 score.
