Jazz needs public support

Ketchum's free Jazz in the Park summer concert series in Rotary Park has finished another successful six weeks of Idaho's best live jazz music. Each Sunday, hundreds of jazz lovers turned out with picnics and enjoyed a relaxing evening of music along the Big Wood River.

In contrast to all the great music was the shocking accidental death of the jazz series' No. 1 fan and sole funder, the very generous Ms. Dale Fowler. That sad event was quickly followed by the realization that future jazz concerts would be dependent on an immediate focus on a new fundraising effort.

Initial verbal requests made to the jazz audience have been met with generous support, and about half the needed funds for next summer are already pledged. The total budget for six concerts, including bands, production costs and advertising, comes to about $13,000 or just over $2,000 per concert. Acquiring funds for summer 2012 is the first priority; however, looking toward future years is also a current consideration.

A Jazz in the Park Fund has been set up as an account in the city of Ketchum as a vehicle for tax-deductible donations. Contributions can be made to the city of Ketchum, with stipulation for the Jazz in the Park Fund. Checks should be mailed to Stephanie McCord, City of Ketchum, Box 2315, Ketchum, ID 83340. Or call Will Caldwell at 726-9059 for more info.
