Wood River High School senior Ben Stout was the boys' winner by nearly a minute Friday when area thinclads debuted their footrace season at the Twin Falls/Jerome Invitational on a 3.1-mile course at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls.
Coach Monte Brothwell of Wood River said, "We had a blistering day of heat, with temperatures ranging from 98 to 102 degrees during the races. Our girls and boys did well for their first meet.
"Jerome proved it has squads to contend with—winning both the girls and boys meets. With Erik Harris of Twin Falls not running, Ben Stout and Chase England were able to finish in the 1-2 spots."
Stout (17:50) and second-place teammate England (18:48) led the Wolverines into second place in the team ranks with 47 points, behind Jerome (30). Jerome placed six in the top 10 of the 46-runner boys' field.
Wood River senior Jade Atkinson (25:11) finished eighth of 39 girls in a race won by Jerome senior Mikesell Clegg (21:34). Another local runner, Community School senior Morgan Atkinson, was fifth overall in 24:35.
Next: Wood River travels to the Minico Invitational Thursday, Sept. 1 at Lake Walcott near Rupert. The only Wolverine home meet of the season is the Sun Valley Classic Friday, Sept. 9 on the Sagewillow Farms course, Elkhorn at Sun Valley. Results from Twin:
