Live music abounds

Summer may be winding down but the music is far from over. Huey Lewis plays tonight at the Sun Valley Pavilion at 8 p.m. to kick off the Danny Thompson Memorial golf tournament.

Over the next week, the valley will play host to indie rock, rockabilly and stragglers from the just-finished Sawtooth Festival and Braun Brothers Reunion in Challis.

There is truly something for everyone this week in the Wood River Valley.

The Sun Valley Brewery on Main Street in Hailey brings to town the alt-pop, indie band Like a Rocket on Friday, Aug. 19, at 8 p.m. This music is danceable love poetry that you'd expect to find only in the big city.

Safety Orange will play for free in the Ketchum Town Square on Thursday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m. Also on Thursday, Cary Judd will play the Hailey Farmer's Market at 5 p.m.

The Mighty Shims at the Ketchum Farmers' Market on Tuesday, Aug. 23.

Paul Thomas will play a free show at the Redfish Lake Lodge on Sunday, Aug. 21, from 4-7 p.m.

On Saturday, Aug. 26, at 8:30 p.m., the Sun Valley Brewery will host Jonathan Warren and the Billy Goats. Describing its music as "progressive psychobilly folk-grass," this band is soulful and certainly Western, if not country.

Whiskey Jacques' on Main Street in Ketchum will host a series of tribute bands, beginning with Cash'd Out tonight, Aug. 17, the premier Johnny Cash tribute band. This show will recall the Man in Black's early Columbia era and Sun Records music, combined with the energy of the live recordings from Folsom Prison and San Quentin.

On Friday, Aug. 19, Whiskey's will host Blistered Earth: The Ultimate Tribute to Metallica. Metallica, formed in 1981, was one of the "big four" of thrash metal bands, alongside Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax.

If metal is not your style and you need to stop making sense, then wait for Saturday, Aug. 20, when Whiskey's will host "This Must Be the Band: A Talking Heads Tribute Band."

The Wicked Spud will host Louie and the Chaperones tonight, Aug. 17, at the Back Alley Party. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Wood River Hospice. The Spud will continue to provide live music on Friday evenings through the remainder of the summer.

Down south at Mahoney's Restaurant in Bellevue, George Devore, fresh from the Braun Brother's Reunion, will play on Thursday, Aug. 18. For those who have missed them around the valley this summer, Old Death Whisper will play rockabilly at Mahoney's on Thursday, Aug. 25. Almost like live music will be available when DJ Marlene plays music at the Silver Dollar Saloon on Friday, Aug. 19.

Lefty's Bar in Ketchum will host Sean Jackson on Saturday, Aug. 20, Couple of Fools on Stools on Sunday, Aug. 21, and Ethan Tucker on Monday, Aug. 22. All shows are in the afternoon and free.

Those who need to do some performing of their own can come to the Silver Dollar in Bellevue on Saturday, Aug. 20, for Karaoke night.
