Neville, Martinez to be feted at dinner

Retired Wood River High School speech arts teacher Tim Neville of Utah and Wood River senior Kaitana Martinez of Bellevue will be honored during the 32nd annual Hall of Fame dinner of the Idaho High School Activities Association Wednesday, Aug. 10 in Boise.

Neville is one of three 2011 IHSAA Hall of Fame inductees and Martinez is one of five Interscholastic Stars chosen from the state of Idaho. Former Wood River teacher and basketball coach Jerry Jaques will also receive a District Distinguished Service Award.

The dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. at DoubleTree Riverside Hotel. Tickets are $25.

National Nordic camp taking place in Sun Valley

Some of the top U.S. cross-country ski racers in the J2 (ages 14-15) class are in Sun Valley this week for the second annual National J2 Talent Identification camp. From Aug. 1-8, the top 22 of the J2 boys and girls in the country are enjoying a full week of dryland training including roller skiing and hiking. The three Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation athletes who have been invited are Zach Lindahl, Sloan Storey and Maggie Williams.

Designed as a first national step up the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association development pipeline, the camp was originally the brainchild of longtime Sun Valley Junior Nordic ski team head coach Rick Kapala. It was held in Michigan and hosted by Michigan Tech in 2010. Staff members include Ali Deines, Josh Smullin, Eric Pepper, Nancy Fiddler and Dan Simoneau.

The USSA Coaches Education Clinic that is free to all USSA licensed coaches is Thursday, Aug. 4 from 1-3 p.m. in the White Clouds Golf Course area at Sun Valley.

Sign up for fall youth soccer

The Sawtooth United Football Club (SUFC) is accepting online registration for its fall 2011 Youth Competitive Soccer Program. Age groups for the fall season are boys and girls U-10 through U-14. That includes children born between Aug. 1, 1997 and July 31, 2002. For more information and to sign up online visit sawtoothunited.com. Deadline for on-time registration is Monday, Aug. 8. A late fee of $40 will be charged for all registration after this date.

Sawtooth Century Bike Tour returns Aug. 13

The 2011 Sawtooth Century Bike Tour is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13. It is a fully supported one-day bicycle tour offering both 50-mile and 100-mile routes from downtown Ketchum north into the Sawtooth Recreation Area.

Both routes start in Ketchum and circle through Elkhorn and Sun Valley before heading north on S.H. 75. The 50-mile route goes to the Galena Lodge turnaround and returns to Ketchum. The 100-mile distance climbs Galena Summit to Alturas Lake before its return. There will be a "King and Queen of the Mountain" competition up the south side of the six-mile Galena Summit.

Raising money for the Galena-area summer trails, the Century Bike Tour is organized by the Blaine County Recreation District with the support of local sponsors. Entry is $75 for 100-mile riders and $65 for 50-mile cyclists. Visit bcrd.org.

Wood River volleyball fundraising tournament Aug. 6-7

Former Albertson College volleyball star and Community School coach Kristyn Rutland has scheduled the first annual Wood River Volleyball Club (WRVBC) tournament fundraiser for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6-7 at Nelson Field in Hailey. All players are welcome for the doubles action, Open or Recreational. A youth clinic will be held each day, with men's, women's and high school competition Saturday and reverse coed play Sunday. High school volleyball team hosts Aug. 11-12 clinic

The Wood River High School volleyball team is hosting a two-day pre-season clinic for girls in grades 6-9 on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 11-12 at the high school gym in Hailey.

Registration is at 9 a.m. on Aug. 11 and the middle school clinic will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon each day. Cost is $25. Parents will need to sign a waiver at registration. For questions or sign-up, call volleyball players Kori Paradis at 721-3035 or Lily Richards at 309-3073.

Tryouts for the 2011 WRHS volleyball team officially begin Monday, Aug. 15 from 9:30-12 at the high school. Questions, call varsity head coach Tim Richards at 578-7847.

Middle school volleyball

Volleyball tryouts for Wood River Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade girls is Monday, Aug. 22. Registration will start at 3 p.m. followed by tryouts until 5:30 p.m. in the middle school gym, Hailey. Physicals are mandatory in order to tryout. Be sure to bring insurance information. "6 at Sochi" Celebration is Aug. 18 at Ketchum Town Square

Raising public awareness to its goal of helping six athletes qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia, the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation will hold another "6 at Sochi" Celebration Thursday, Aug. 18 from 5-9 p.m. at Ketchum Town Square. Free to all, the event is oriented to families, locals and resort guests. SVSEF Olympic Development Team athletes will greet the public. Plans call for music by three bands, food vendors, a dunk tank and merchandise for sale. Event organizers will raffle off a mountain bike and Baldy ski pass. Admission is free, but the suggested $10 donation gives you a chance to enter the raffle. Call 726-4129 or visit the SVSEF site, svsef.org.

Coed Wood Bat Softball Tournament is Aug. 27-28 in Hailey

To raise money for the Wood River High School softball program, local softball enthusiasts will conduct their second annual Coed Wood Bat 1-Pitch Tournament on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 27-28 at Lions Park in Hailey. For the fee of $200, teams are guaranteed three games. Sign up deadline is Friday, Aug. 12. Call Jimberly Rooney at 720-9195.

Baseball tryout and hitting camp

Coast to Coast Baseball (1-740-373-4455) has invited local baseball players ages 10-18 to one of its tryout events, this one scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 20 at 10 a.m. at the Sandlot Sports Complex indoor turf facility in Boise. Visit CoasttoCoastAthletics.com for details.

"Speedy Peterson" celebration Saturday in Boise

A celebration of the life of Olympic silver medalist Jeret "Speedy" Peterson will be held Saturday, Aug. 6 in his hometown of Boise. Peterson died last week. Formal services are set for 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6 in the Jordan Ballroom at the Student Union Building at Boise State University. A large gathering of family, friends and teammates is expected.
