SV Council changes meeting time

The Sun Valley City Council voted Thursday to change its regular meeting time from 4 p.m. to 1 p.m. Regular meetings of the council are on the third Thursday of each month.

The earlier time was agreed upon because meetings can run four or more hours, stretching late into the evening.

Regular meetings had been scheduled for 4 p.m. to accommodate people who might be working during the day, Mayor Wayne Willich said. However, he said, the number of people who attended meetings appears more dependent on agenda items than meeting time.

"If there's something that impacts them or they're interested in, they'll come," he said.

Regular meetings for August through December are now scheduled for 1 p.m. on Aug. 18, Sept. 15, Oct. 20, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15.

Swim program helps third-graders

Idaho ranks third in the nation for drowning rates, and drowning is the second leading cause of death in the United States for children between the ages of 2 and 14. To combat this statistic, the Y partnered with USA Swimming and the Blaine County School District to create the six-week Make-a-Splash program with third-graders at Hemingway Elementary School. As a result, every third-grader at Hemingway Elementary has learned to swim.

The Y hopes to expand this program districtwide in 2012.

Library to unveil fiber-optic Internet

From noon to 2 p.m. that day, Syringa Networks will host a free barbecue in the library's north parking lot. The Boise-based company donated about $40,000 worth of equipment and labor.
