The Croy Canyon Ranch Foundation has received a $250,000 pledge, bringing it closer to its goal of raising $13 million for a new senior care facility.

The Nancy Eccles Hayward and Homer M. Hayward Family Foundation pledged the money to help fund the planned Croy Canyon Ranch Continuing Care Facility west of Hailey.

"We are so pleased to receive this fabulous campaign support from a family that understands the critical need to take care of our seniors," said Anita McCann, the Croy Canyon Ranch Foundation's fundraising chair.

The donation brings the fundraising total to $3.8 million. Bud Purdy, spokesman for the foundation, said the donation makes "a statement" and might inspire others to give.

"The creation of this continuing-care community is the most important charitable project under way in Blaine County," he said.

Wendy Hayward, Ketchum resident and executive director of the Hayward Family Foundation, said the donation is a way to honor her parents' memories.

"It's important to have a vibrant living community for seniors, where they can live as independently as possible with dignity and grace, and enjoy the quality of life our parents had," she said.

The proposed 75,000-square-foot facility, planned for a site near the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, is estimated to cost $30.8 million. The facility is meant to replace Blaine Manor, the skilled nursing facility that is located on Main Street in Hailey.

The manor is currently financially unsustainable and is being funded through a levy on county taxpayers until a new facility can be completed in 2014. Croy Canyon Ranch would offer a tiered model of senior care, through which revenue from independent and assisted living, for residents who need less medical care, helps cover the expenses of patients who need skilled nursing.

According to Blaine Manor Finance Director Stephanie Jaskowski, that model would be more financially stable than the skilled-nursing-only care offered at Blaine Manor.

The foundation needs to raise $13 million to supplement the funding available from the sale of Blaine Manor and a construction loan.

Road to the Ranch

The process of building a replacement facility for Blaine Manor began in 2007 with a feasibility study conducted by the foundation. The study showed that though most community members would support the facility, fulfilling even the initial goal of $12 million in philanthropic donations would be difficult.
