If you're not busy Sunday afternoon and want to be entertained, wander over to Sun Valley Outdoor Ice Rink and watch the culminating event of the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club's 45th annual Summer Skating Championships.
Group Showcase is a hoot, a wonderful display of skating, luscious costumes and showmanship. As SVFSC publicity chair Andrea Nelson said about this year's Group Showcase competition Sunday, July 24 at 3:30 p.m., "It should be epic."
The Sun Valley Lion Clubs are participating in the Small Group Showcase (3-6 skaters) along with Park City (Utah) and the Wasatch Wonders, also from Utah. That's followed by Large Group Showcase featuring pieces by Denver (Colo.), Desert Ice (Arizona), the SVFSC Starz and a Sun Valley Summer Skate School group.
Summer Skating Championship events won't take place Saturday because that's the big day for the U.S. Collegiate Figure Skating Championships, which are running simultaneously with the SVFSC's nonqualifying championship.
The U.S. Collegiate Junior Ladies short program kicks off that three-day competition Friday at 7:15 p.m. Collegiate Junior Men, Senior Ladies and Senior Men's events run all day Saturday and Sunday on the Sun Valley indoor rink.
Meanwhile, the SVFSC's Summer Championships begin Thursday, July 21 with compulsories, spins, solo dance, artistic and short programs, and lower-level Free Skate events in the indoor rink. Friday features Basic Skills and higher-level Free Skate.
Chief referee is Jessica Gaynor. Gold level sponsors are Sun Valley Co. and Wells Fargo Bank.
