Symphony season at the Sun Valley Pavilion beckons all music lovers, not just because it's free, but because it's an experience. Adding to the world-class Sun Valley Summer Symphony orchestra this summer will be the new Edgar M. Bronfman "In Focus" series, which begins Sunday, July 24, and continues on July 25, 27 and 29. The "In Focus" series will feature artist in residence Jean-Yves Thibaudet and soprano Heidi Grant Murphy.

The Sun Valley Summer Symphony has recreated its chamber music series into a weeklong, multidisciplinary exploration of a musical theme using discussion and demonstration in combination with performance. The "In Focus" series is designed to bring the audience inside the music—bringing it "in focus."

The theme for "In Focus" is "Vive la France—Excursions Through the French Musical Countryside," which pays tribute to the rich musical history of France as well as to the Sun Valley Summer Symphony's first artist in residence, pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. The four concerts will explore French music, with an emphasis on Impressionism, through sonatas, duets and quartets. Discussions and demonstrations will be led by Music Director Alasdair Neale and begin at 5:30 p.m. After a short break, the concert, which showcases the music that was just discussed, will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The series finale on Friday, July 29, will feature Thibaudet and a chamber orchestra of musicians from the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. The program, "Let Me Arrange That For You," will highlight the composition and orchestration process. Each work will be performed twice. First by Thibaudet as it was originally composed for piano, followed by an orchestrated version. This concert will depart from the "In Focus" format and begin with the musical performance at 5:30 p.m.

As artist in residence, Thibaudet will be involved in every facet of Sun Valley Summer Symphony activities, including performing as a chamber musician as well as with the orchestra on opening night, Monday, Aug. 1. This will be Thibaudet's fourth performance with the Sun Valley Summer Symphony.

Murphy will make her Sun Valley debut at the Monday, July 25, "In Focus" concert with her husband, Kevin Murphy, accompanying her at the piano.

The Edgar M. Bronfman "In Focus" series and all Sun Valley Summer Symphony performances are admission-free at the Sun Valley Pavilion, the home of the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. For details, call 622-5607 or visit www.svsummersymphony.org.
