Collegiate skating finals coming to Sun Valley

With SVFSC summer competition

It's going to be a big week at Sun Valley Skating Center where two major figure skating events will take place simultaneously over the weekend of July 22-24.

The Sun Valley Figure Skating Club is hosting not only its 45th annual Summer Skating Championships, but also the 2011 U.S. Collegiate Figure Skating Championships. That is the only figure skating event in the U.S. open solely to high-level, full-time college students.

Collegiate skaters will gather Thursday for the welcome and draw party where they'll be introduced at 8 p.m. on the outdoor rink. Practice takes place all day Friday. Junior Ladies short program kicks off the competition at 7:15 p.m.

Junior Men, Senior Ladies and Senior Men's events run all day Saturday and Sunday on the indoor rink.

The SVFSC's Summer Championships begin Thursday, July 21 with compulsories, spins, solo dance, artistic and short programs, and lower-level Free Skate events in the indoor rink. Friday features Basic Skills and higher-level Free Skate competition.

As the collegiates unfold Saturday, the Summer Championships pause for practice ice. Sunday is the big day for the club's annual non-qualifying competition with the spectator-friendly Interpretive Improvisation and Showcase.

Be sure to catch Showcase, a theatrical costume event Sunday on the outdoor rink.
