The Sun Valley Ice Shows are widely known as a showcase for the art, comedy and drama of ice-skating. The summer shows feature world-class figure skaters and Olympic medalists under the stars behind the Sun Valley Lodge.
An unexpected participant took to the ice during Saturday's evening performance, wearing only flip-flops and a grin.
"It made everyone's jaws drop," said Ice Show Director Scott Irvine.
Some kids were heard asking if the streaker was part of the ice show. Other kids called the display "disgusting."
"Obviously, we do not think this is an appropriate activity at an ice show," said Jack Sibbach, director of marketing and public relations for Sun Valley Co.
Professional skater Darlin Baker said she had never seen anything like it in her 19 years as a Sun Valley Ice Show performer.
"His timing was perfect," Baker said. "He came out during the grand finale when we had all linked arms in the pinwheel. Nobody missed a step, but the skaters were laughing pretty hard."
According to spectators, the "streaker" emerged from the Sun Valley Lodge Terrace, crossed the ice rink during the grand finale and darted away toward a condominium complex beyond the Sun Valley Pavilion.
Sun Valley security had not reported the incident to the Blaine County Sheriff's Office as of press time Tuesday. Apparently, the streaker remains at large.
Streaking is commonly defined as "the act of running nude through a public place." Some people consider it a light-hearted form of exhibitionism, intended to amuse rather than shock. The heyday of streaking was in the 1970s, but apparently some daring individuals are keeping the tradition alive.
An indecent exposure offense in Idaho can result in a $300 fine and up to six months in jail. A second charge of indecent exposure is a felony and can result in up to 10 years in prison.
The streaker has been described as a man in his mid-20s, but no one interviewed for this story could provide a description of his face.
