Bicyclists, pay attention!

It has become clear to me that bicycle riders are not aware of town ordinances that stipulate that bicycle riders must adhere to the traffic laws and regulations. Nowhere in the town are there any signs indicating such. Bicycle riders are convinced that they have the right of way at any intersection, which is totally wrong. They believe that they do not have to stop at red traffic lights or stop signs.

I encountered a woman riding a bicycle with an infant in a rear-pulled carrier who went through a stop sign without even looking. I was driving my vehicle west on Fifth Street and came to the intersection at First Street where I did not have a stop sign. Fortunately, I was aware of her and slowed to a crawl to let her go by. I yelled to her that she had to stop and she immediately gave me the finger and yelled back that she did not have to stop and that I did. This woman clearly had put herself and her child in harm's way because of her ignorance of the law.

Do we need a tragedy to happen before the town makes bicycle riders aware if its laws? It is also amazing to me that with the beautiful and plentiful bicycle paths in Ketchum, people have to ride in the streets with their children. Ketchum, do something before we have serious accidents.
