Make plans for Northern Rockies Folk Festival

The online discount ticket-purchasing deadline for the 34th annual Northern Rockies Folk Festival is the end of the day on today, July 15. Log onto and use code NRFF2011 to purchase discounted tickets.

The festival will take place Friday, Aug. 5, and Saturday, Aug. 6, at Hop Porter Park in Hailey. Tickets are $32 for two days or $16 for Friday and $21 for Saturday. Shows start at 5 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday. Headliners include James McMurtry and the Gourds. In addition, the festival will include Quailfish, Roses Pawn Shop, The Sloans, Justin Wells, Carly Gibson, Intersection, Slow Children Playing, Up A Creek and Bill Coffey. Other valley talent will include Ken Martin, Tim East, Fletcher Brock and Jim Paisley.

This year the festival will offer overnight camping and RV parking across the street at Lion's Park on the Big Wood River. Reservations are available at the Hailey Chamber of Commerce.

On Sunday, Aug. 7, a "Picking Party" will take place at Lion's Park for all string instrument pickers who want to come together and play informally. Chapter One Bookstore in Ketchum, Shelley's Deli in Hailey and the Hailey Chamber of Commerce will sell service-fee-free tickets. Tickets will also be available at the gate, while they last.

It's magic at the library

The Community Library in Ketchum celebrates Grand Friends Day on Tuesday, July 19, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event is open to all children, grandparents and grandfriends. In addition, magician Lisa Menna will perform and Ann Christensen will give a science presentation. Menna has been seen on "Entertainment Tonight" and "Good Morning America" and has been featured in Inc. and Entrepreneur magazines as well as The Wall Street Journal. For details, call 726-7355.

Sun Valley Shakedown is coming

On Thursday, July 28, at 5 p.m. Festival Meadows on Sun Valley Road will be the location for the first Sun Valley Shakedown music festival with Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers, Bela Fleck and the Original Flecktones, and opening band the Fox Street Allstars. General admission is $48. VIP entry is $125 with reserved parking, reserved seating, VIP restroom access, VIP bar service and a commemorative poster. Tickets are available online at, and at Atkinsons' markets and Wood River Community YMCA. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Y.
